Isaac Melvin House
The Isaac Melvin House is a historic house at 19 Centre Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This -story Greek Revival-Italianate house was built in 1842 by Oliver Wood and Isaac Melvin as the latter's home. Melvin is also notable for designing the North Avenue Congregational Church. Despite an Italianate T-shaped massing, the building's front facade is strongly Greek Revival, with 4 two-story pilasters supporting an entablature and topped by the fully pedimented gable end of the roof. The tympanum of the pediment has an Italianate round-arch window in it. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Isaac Melvin
Isaac Melvin (1811-1853) was an American architect from Massachusetts. Melvin was born in Concord, Massachusetts in 1811. In the 1830s, he established himself as a builder in Lexington. In 1841 he relocated to Cambridge, where he added architecture to his profession. In about 1848 he gave up construction, taking up solely architecture. He formed a partnership with Isaiah B. Young (who had worked with him since 1846), and the two opened an office in Boston. They dissolved their partnership in 1852, when Melvin decided to go to San Francisco. He grew ill on the voyage, and died in San Francisco soon after his arrival. After Melvin's departure, Young pursued an architectural career in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Cincinnati. North Avenue Congregational Church
North Avenue Congregational Church (now known as John and Carol Moriarty Library, and previously as Old Cambridge Baptist Church and North Prospect Congregational Church and Prospect Hall) is a historic church meetinghouse at 1801 (previously at 1803Address is incorrectly recorded as "183" in the National Register of Historic Places.) Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It was completely renovated in 2015 to become a library for Lesley University. The former church now forms part of what is now the Lunder Arts Center complex. History of ownership The church was originally built in 1845 on Kirkland Street near Harvard Square, for the Old Cambridge Baptist Church congregation, to designs by local architect Isaac Melvin. It was sold to the North Avenue Congregational Society in 1866 at which time it was renamed the North Avenue Congregational Church.
