Isaac Goldsmid
Sir Isaac Lyon Goldsmid, 1st Baronet (13 January 1778 – 27 April 1859) was a financier and one of the leading figures in the Jewish emancipation in the United Kingdom, who became the first British Jew to receive a hereditary title. Biography Birth Isaac Goldsmid was born in London on 13 January 1778. Career He began in business with a firm of bullion brokers, Mocatta & Goldsmid (estab. 1684), to the Bank of England and the East India Company. He became a partner in Mocatta & Goldsmid and amassed a large fortune. Moreover, he assisted by his capital and his enterprise to build some of the railways in southern England and also the London docks. Philanthropy He is chiefly known for his efforts to obtain the emancipation of the Jews in England and for his part in founding University College London. The history of the Jews in England can be traced to at least 750 CE through the Canonical Exceptions of Echbright, published by the Archbishop of York, although it is likely that there had been some Jewish presence in the Roman period and possibly earlier. The first written record of Jewish settlement in England dates from 1070. The Jewish settlement continued until King Edward I's Edict of Expulsion in 1290. Goldsmid Baronets
The Goldsmid Baronetcy, of St John's Lodge in the County of Surrey, was a title in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 15 October 1841 for Isaac Goldsmid, a financier and one of the leading figures in the Jewish emancipation in the United Kingdom. He was the first Jew to be created a baronet. He was succeeded by his son Francis Henry, 2nd Baronet the second Baronet. He was a barrister and sat as member of parliament for Reading. He was childless and was succeeded by his nephew Julian, the third Baronet. He was a barrister, businessman and Liberal politician. Julian Goldsmid had eight daughters but no sons and on his death in 1896 the title became extinct. Goldsmid Family
Goldsmid is the name of a family of Anglo-Jewish bankers who sprang from Aaron Goldsmid (died 1782), a Dutch merchant who settled in England around 1763. Two of his sons, Benjamin Goldsmid (c. 1753–1808) and Abraham Goldsmid (c. 1756–1810), began business together around 1777 as bill-brokers in London. They became great powers in the money market during the Napoleonic Wars through their dealings with the government. In 1810, Abraham Goldsmid was joint contractor with the Barings for a government loan, but owing to a depreciation of the scrip, he was forced into bankruptcy and committed suicide. His brother, in a fit of depression, had similarly taken his own life two years before. Both were noted for their public and private generosity, and both played major roles in funding and managing the Naval Asylum – later renamed the Royal Naval Asylum. Frederick Goldsmid
Frederick David Goldsmid (31 January 1812 – 18 March 1866), son of Sir Isaac Lyon Goldsmid and his wife Isabel, was an English politician. He was elected a Member of Parliament (MP) for Honiton (UK Parliament constituency), Honiton on 12 July 1865. Goldsmid married, on 23 July 1834, Caroline Samuel (1814–1885), daughter of Phillip Moses Samuel and Julia Goldsmid.Their first child was Helen Lucas (philanthropist), Helen (later Lucas) who was born in the next year. They would have eight more children. Frederick taught Helen Hebrew when she was a child. She would be a philanthropist after she became a rich widow. He died on 18 March 1866. He and his wife, who died in 1885, are both buried at Balls Pond Road Cemetery.
