"Is Vic There?" is a song by post-punk band Department S, released by Demon Records on 29 December 1980. It was their first single under the name Department S, after their debut single "I'm Gonna Rough My Girlfriend's Boyfriend Up Tonight" under the name Guns for Hire. It was produced by former Mott the Hoople members Buffin and Overend Watts. The title is a quotation from a Monty Python sketch titled "Phone-In", which closed the comedy troupe's 1973 ''Matching Tie and Handkerchief'' album. Release "Is Vic There?" charted at No. 22 on the UK Singles Chart and, when re-released on RCA Records in March 1981, it made No. 67 on the Hot Dance Club Play chart. The Demon and RCA UK B-side was a cover of T.Rex's "Solid Gold Easy Action", featuring Thunderthighs on backing vocals. Department S are a British post-punk/ new wave band formed in 1980, who took their name from the 1960s TV series '' Department S''. They are best known for their debut single, " Is Vic There?", which was originally released in December 1980 and reached No. 22 on the UK Singles Chart the following year. History 1980s Department S evolved from a previous punk/ ska combo, Guns for Hire, fronted by Vaughn Toulouse and also featuring former Madness drummer John Hasler. Mike Herbage joined them on guitar and wrote Guns for Hire's only single, "I'm Gonna Rough My Girlfriend's Boyfriend Up Tonight", released on the Korova record label. David Maurice Clarke (born 1968) is an English electronic dance music DJ, producer and radio presenter. BBC radio presenter John Peel named Clarke "The Baron of Techno". Early life Born in Brighton, East Sussex, England, Clarke was educated at Brighton College, but moved out of home at the age of 16 after his parents separated. Since the age of 8, Clarke has been interested in music and technology, and to him, "there was no alternative but to go professional." Clan of Xymox, also known as simply Xymox, are a Dutch rock band formed in 1981 best known as pioneers of dark wave music. Thunderthighs (also known as "Thunder Thighs") were a British backing vocal group, who released records in their own right. Career The female trio, consisting of Karen Friedman, Dari Lalou (American) and Casey Synge, provided the backing vocals to Lou Reed's hit single, " Walk on the Wild Side" (from his 1972 ''Transformer'' album) which became a top 10 hit in the UK.
