Irwin is an unincorporated area, unincorporated community in Merced County, California, Merced County, California, United States. It is located west-northwest of Delhi, California, Delhi and about south of Hilmar, California, Hilmar, at an elevation of 98 feet (30 m). For census purposes, Irwin is aggregated with nearby communities in the census-designated place Hilmar-Irwin, California, Hilmar-Irwin, California. A post office operated at Irwin from 1911 to 1958. The name honors W.A. Irwin, founder of the town. In the early twentieth century, Irwin had a schoolhouse with several teachers, three churches, a hotel, and two cream shipping stations. It was founded by Samuel Irwin in 1979 as Irwin International, Inc. The company's primary export was magnetic tape data storage and backup systems for personal computers. Irwin was one of the first companies to manufacture quarter-inch cartridge (QIC) systems for the personal computer market. In 1989, the company was acquired by Cipher Data Products. It is best known for producing Vise-Grip locking pliers. Additionally, it produces clamps, drill bits, taps and dies, screw extractors, bolt extractors, saw blades, pipe wrenches, screwdrivers, snips, and other construction tools. History Irwin was founded in 1885 in Martinsville, Ohio as the Irwin Auger Bit Company by Charles Irwin, a pharmacist. Irwin had bought the rights to a solid-center auger bit from a local blacksmith. In 1924, another blacksmith, Danish immigrant William Petersen of DeWitt, Nebraska, invented the first locking pliers and named them Vise-Grips. Irwin Toy Limited was a Canadian distributor and manufacturer of toys. It was Canada's oldest toy company and remained independent and family owned until 2001. History The company began in 1926 as an importer and distributor of dry goods and clothing, located in Sam and Beatrice Irwin's house. Later on, the company moved to a warehouse in the west end of Toronto and focused mainly on toys. Sam and Beatrice's sons, Arnold and Mac Irwin, took over management of the company in the years to follow. Most of Irwin's profits came from distributing other (usually American) companies' toys.
