Wingate is a town in Union County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 3,491 at the 2010 census. History The Wingate Commercial Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014. It is named for Washington Manly Wingate. Wingate University is a private Baptist university with campuses in Wingate, Charlotte, and Hendersonville, North Carolina. Irwin Belk (April 4, 1922 – February 24, 2018) was an American businessman and politician. Belk was born in Charlotte, North Carolina. He went to The McCallie School and Davidson College. In 1946, Belk received his bachelor's degree from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Belk served in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II.
