Irvin Capers Lord
Irvin Capers Lord (November 23, 1827 – September 22, 1914) was an industrialist and mayor of Houston. Early life Lord was born in Charleston, South Carolina on November 23, 1827, to Jacob Nathaniel Lord and Mary Elizabeth Tarbox Lord. Career Lord was a tradesman and an industrialist. He had owned a sawmill in Houston, but was best known for Eagle Iron Works, a manufacturer of iron and brass products. Lord was elected to his first public office in 1858, when he began serving as Alderman for the First Ward in Houston. In addition to appointment to municipal government, he was elected as Houston City Marshall and Alderman for Fifth Ward. After serving as the Harris County Sheriff and Harris County Commissioner, Houston elected Lord as the 26th mayor of the city. Glenwood Cemetery (Houston, Texas)
Glenwood Cemetery is located in Houston, Texas, United States. Developed in 1871, the first professionally designed cemetery in the city accepted its first burial in 1872. Its location at Washington Avenue overlooking Buffalo Bayou served as an entertainment attraction in the 1880s. The design was based on principles for garden cemeteries, breaking the pattern of the typical gridiron layouts of most Houston cemeteries. Many influential people lay to rest at Glenwood, making it the "River Oaks, Houston, River Oaks of the dead." As of 2018, Glenwood includes the annexed property of the adjacent Washington Cemetery, creating a total area of with still undeveloped. The Redeemers were a political coalition in the Southern United States during the Reconstruction era of the United States, Reconstruction Era that followed the American Civil War. Thomas Scanlan
Thomas Scanlan (21 May 1874 – 9 January 1930) was an Irish barrister and nationalist politician. He was Member of Parliament (MP) for North Sligo from 1909 to 1918, as a member of the Irish Parliamentary Party in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom. Early life Son of Thomas Scanlan, a farmer, he was born at Drumcliffe, County Sligo, and educated at Summerhill College in Sligo and at the University of St Andrews, Scotland. In 1905 he married Mary Helen Mullen of Glasgow, daughter of John Mullen. He began his career as a journalist on the ''Glasgow Observer''.
