''Ironweed'' is a 1983 novel by American author William Kennedy (author), William Kennedy. ''Ironweed'' received the 1984 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and is the third book in Kennedy's Albany Cycle. It is included in the Western Canon of the critic Harold Bloom. The novel was adapted into a 1987 Ironweed (film), film of the same name. Plot summary Set during the Great Depression, ''Ironweed'' tells the story of a bum named Francis Phelan (fictional character), Francis Phelan. Phelan is a native of Albany, New York who left his family after accidentally killing his infant son. The novel focuses on Phelan's return (after being gone twenty-two years) to Albany over the triduum of All Hallows Eve, All Saints' Day, and All Souls' Day. Moreover, a surreal element is added to the narrative, as Phelan sees and tries to interact with dead people from his troubled past. ''Ironweed'' is a 1987 American drama film directed by Héctor Babenco. Adapted to the screen by William Kennedy from his similarly named Pulitzer Prize–winning novel, ''Ironweed'' stars Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep, with Carroll Baker, Michael O'Keefe, Diane Venora, Fred Gwynne, Nathan Lane, and Tom Waits in supporting roles. The story concerns the relationship of a homeless couple—Francis, an alcoholic, and Helen, a terminally ill woman—during the years following the Great Depression. ''Vernonia'' is a genus of about 350 species of forbs and shrubs in the family Asteraceae. Some species of this genus are known as ironweeds. Some species are edible and of economic value. They are known for having intense purple flowers. There have been numerous distinct subgenera and subsections named in this genus, and some botanists have divided the genus into several distinct genera. For instance, the ''Flora of North America'' recognizes only about twenty species in ''Vernonia'' ''sensu stricto'', seventeen of which are in North America north of Mexico, with the others being found in South America. Taxonomy The genus was circumscribed by Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber in Gen. Pl. ed. 8 vol.2 on page 541 in 1791. ''Cyanthillium cinereum'' (also known as little ironweed and ''poovamkurunnal'' or ''poovamkurunnila'' in Malayalam, and ''monara kudumbiya'' in Sinhalese) is a species of perennial plants in the sunflower family. The species is native to tropical Africa and to tropical Asia (India, Sri Lanka, Indochina, Indonesia, etc.) and has become naturalized in Australia, Mesoamerica, tropical South America, the West Indies, and the US State of Florida. ''Cyanthillium cinereum'' is an annual herb up to 120 cm (4 feet) tall. It produces flat-topped arrays of numerous flower heads, each with pinkish or purplish disc florets but no ray florets. ''Verbesina'', many species of which have crownbeard as part of their common names, is a genus of flowering plants, in the family Asteraceae. It is a large genus of about 350 species. All of the species bear white or yellow flowers similar to small sunflowers. The name ''Verbesina'' very likely refers to the similarity of the foliage to that of the (unrelated) ''Verbena.'' ''Verbesina'' species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species. These include ''Schinia bina'', which has been recorded from '' V. encelioides'', and '' Schinia siren'' which feeds exclusively on that species. Pollen grains from eight of the nine species of ''Verbesina'' found in Brazil have been characterized as oblate-spheroidal, medium-sized, isopolar monads.
