Iron Composer
Iron Composer is a music competition operated where five composers are given just five hours to write a piece of music. The competition is operated by Analog Arts, and it was first organized as part of the '' ARTSaha!'' festival. Iron Composer is currently held at the Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory of Music in Berea, Ohio. The competition is open to composers of all ages. History The idea for Iron Composer originated in the composition seminars of Lucky Mosko Stephen L. (Lucky) Mosko ( - ) was an American composer. His music blended high modernism (including serialism) with world music, and he was an expert in Icelandic folk music. Mystery Mansion (board Game)
''Mystery Mansion'' is the name of a series of board games in which players search furniture and other objects inside a mansion to locate a hidden treasure or stash of money. The first version of the game was released by the Milton Bradley Company in 1984, the same year when Hasbro took over that company. Instead of a standard game board, the original ''Mystery Mansion'' features a modular board where players build the mansion by adding new rooms drawn at random. Hasbro then released an electronic talking version under its Parker Brothers brand in the 1990s. In this version, game play is guided by a computerized talking "electronic organizer", providing clues and other information to players during each game. Wind Quintet
A wind quintet, also known as a woodwind quintet, is a group of five wind players (most commonly flute, oboe, clarinet, French horn and bassoon). Unlike the string quartet (of 4 string instruments) with its homogeneous blend of sound color, the instruments in a wind quintet differ from each other considerably in technique, idiom, and timbre. The modern wind quintet sprang from the octet ensemble favored in the court of Joseph II in late 18th century Vienna: two oboes, two clarinets, two (natural) horns, and two bassoons. The influence of Haydn's chamber writing suggested similar possibilities for winds, and advances in the building of these instruments in that period made them more useful in small ensemble settings, leading composers to attempt smaller combinations. ''Impression, Sunrise'' (French: ''Impression, soleil levant'') is an 1872 painting by Claude Monet first shown at what would become known as the "Exhibition of the Impressionists" in Paris in April, 1874. The painting is credited with inspiring the name of the Impressionist movement. ''Impression, Sunrise'' depicts the port of Le Havre, Monet's hometown. It is now displayed at the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris. Piano Trio
A piano trio is a group of piano and two other instruments, usually a violin and a cello, or a piece of music written for such a group. It is one of the most common forms found in classical chamber music. The term can also refer to a group of musicians who regularly play this repertoire together; for a number of well-known piano trios, see below. The term "piano trio" is also used for jazz trios, where it most commonly designates a pianist accompanied by bass and drums, though guitar or saxophone may figure as well. Yotam Haber
Yotam Haber is a composer based in Kansas City. He is a 2005 Guggenheim fellow, a 2007 Rome Prize winner in Music Composition., and was named a 2023-2024 Fulbright Distinguished Senior Scholar, teaching and researching at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance. Biography Yotam Haber was born October 27, 1976 in the Netherlands and grew up in Israel, Nigeria, and Milwaukee. He studied music composition at Indiana University with Eugene O'Brien (composer), Eugene O'Brien and Claude Baker and then earned his doctorate at Cornell with Steven Stucky and Roberto Sierra. In 2013 Haber married visual artist Anna Schuleit. Regina Company
The Regina Company was a manufacturer of mechanical musical instruments before it became a major vacuum maker. History In 1889, Gustave Brachhausen, the foreman of the Symphonion music box company based in Leipzig, created the polyphon Musikwerke in partnership with a Symphonion engineer Paul Riessner. Three years later, at the age of 35, Brachhausen expanded his enterprise to America by establishing the Regina Music Box Company. After sailing to America in September 1892, he leased some space in Jersey City, and with financing from Knauth, Nachod & Kuhne in Leipzig, Brachhausen set up shop in partnership with Riessner and Johannas J. Mari Takano
is a Japanese composer, pianist, essayist, and teacher. Takano's work, and musical voice, has been recognized as among the most distinctive to be found amid Japanese composers of the "post-Takemitsu generation". Education Takano completed four years of music instruction at the Toho Gakuen School of Music in her native Tokyo, including a composition course with Mutsuo Shishido and, in 1983, lessons with Yoriaki Matsudaira and Jo Kondo. From 1983, Takano began to study in Germany with Brian Ferneyhough at the Musikhochschule Freiburg (Freiburg University of Music), and in 1986 Takano had private lessons with Morton Feldman. Melody Eötvös
Melody Eötvös (born 1984) is an Australian composer of classical music. Melody was born to a musical family. Her father was a jazz musician and her mother was a pianist. She began studying music theory and piano aged 5, before learning cello at age 8. She had also completed her first composition that year, a cello duet. She obtained a degree in musical composition at the Queensland Conservatory under the tutelage of Gerardo Dirié. She went on to receive a doctorate in music from the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, and a master's degree in music from the Royal Academy of Music in London. In 2009 she received her first major award, the APRA Professional Development Award in Classical Music Composition (APRA Music Awards), that included $16,000 in study and travel grants. Prepared Piano
A prepared piano is a piano that has had its sounds temporarily altered by placing bolts, screws, mutes, rubber erasers, and/or other objects on or between the strings. Its invention is usually traced to John Cage's dance music for '' Bacchanale'' (c. 1938), created without room for a percussion orchestra. Cage has cited Henry Cowell as an inspiration for developing piano extended techniques, involving strings within a piano being manipulated instead of the keyboard. Typical of Cage's practice as summed up in the ''Sonatas and Interludes'' (1946–48) is that each key of the piano has its own characteristic timbre, and that the original pitch of the string will not necessarily be recognizable. Jakub Polaczyk, (born 1983 in Kraków) is a Polish composer and pianist based in New York City. Winner of the American Prize in Composition 2020 and Iron Composer 2013. Graduated from the Academy of Music in Kraków, Jagiellonian University and Carnegie Mellon University. He studied in Poland with: Marcel Chyrzyński, Krzysztof Penderecki, Marek Chołoniewski (pl), in Belgium with Jan Van Landeghem and in the USA with Reza Vali Reza Vali (born 1952 in Ghazvin) is an Iranian musician and composer.
