Irish TV
Irish TV was an Irish television channel. It had offices across Ireland and in the US and UK. It was headquartered in County Mayo, Ireland. History Founders Mairead Ní Mhaoilchiaráin and Pierce O'Reilly trialled Mayo TV for a number of years before setting up Irish TV. On 20 August 2014 the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) entered into negotiations with Irish TV for a broadcast licence. Irish TV launched on 1 May 2014 as a channel containing Irish content targeted at Irish people at home, and abroad as part of the global Irish diaspora. The channel originally ran as part of Showcase on Freesat channel 163 and Sky channel 191. In July 2016 Irish TV received ministerial approval from Minister for Communications Denis Naughten to launch on the Irish Digital Terrestrial Saorview platform. 576i is a standard-definition television, standard-definition digital video mode, originally used for Digitization, digitizing 625 lines, 625 line Analog television, analogue television in most countries of the world where the utility frequency for electric power distribution is 50 Hz. Because of its close association with the legacy colour encoding systems, it is often referred to as PAL#PAL region, PAL, PAL/SECAM or SECAM when compared to its 60 Hz (typically, see PAL-M) NTSC-colour-encoded counterpart, 480i. Standard-definition television (SDTV; also standard definition or SD) is a television system that uses a resolution that is not considered to be either high or enhanced definition. ''Standard'' refers to offering a similar resolution to the analog broadcast systems used when it was introduced. 5Spike was a British free-to-air television channel owned by ViacomCBS Networks UK & Australia. Launching on 15 April 2015 on Freeview as just Spike, it was a localised version of the American cable channel Spike (now Paramount Network), and became a multiplex channel of Channel 5 in 2017 when it renamed as 5Spike. It primarily aired entertainment programmes, including action and drama series, police documentaries, and programming from its American counterpart, as well as mixed martial arts. On 7 January 2020, the network was discontinued, with Paramount Network assuming its channel placements and programming. The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI; ) is a former broadcasting authority which regulated both public and commercial broadcasting sector in Ireland. It was established in 2009, effectively replacing the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (BCI) (). It was dissolved in 2023 and its staff and functions were transferred to a new body entitled . Saorview
Saorview ( ) is the national digital terrestrial television (DTT) service in Ireland. It is owned by RTÉ and operated by 2RN. The service began operation on 29 October 2010 on a trial basis with a full launch on 26 May 2011. By legislation it was required to be available to approximately 90% of the population by end of October 2010 in a public testing capacity and nationwide by December 2011. The national public launch was preceded by a public information campaign, which began on 15 March 2011, with television and radio advertising beginning on 17 March 2011.
