Irish Democratic Party
The Irish Democratic Party (IDP) was a minor Irish political party formed in 2013, as a result of a split with Direct Democracy Ireland. Another minor party of the same name but different ideology and leadership had been established in 2010 but was later dissolved. The party advocates the introduction of participatory democracy in the Republic of Ireland. The IDP ran two candidates in the 2016 general election, the party chairperson Ken Smollen ran in Offaly. He received 2.2% of the first preference votes and was eliminated on the second count. Direct Democracy Ireland
Direct Democracy Ireland (, ) is a minor List of political parties in the Republic of Ireland, political party in Ireland. It has no representation at local or national level. Established in 2010, Direct Democracy Ireland (DDI) was registered as a political party in October 2012. The organisation was founded by photographer Raymond Whitehead. The party describes itself as neither "left or right, but about balance", seeking to transform the political system from representative democracy to direct democracy. Tullamore
Tullamore (; ) is the county town of County Offaly in Ireland. It is on the Grand Canal, in the middle of the county, and is the fourth most populous town in the midlands region with 14,607 inhabitants at the 2016 census. The town retained Gold Medal status in the National Tidy Town Awards in 2015 and also played host to the World Sheep Dog Trials in 2005 which attracted international interest in the region. The Tullamore Show is held near the town every year. The town's most famous export is Tullamore Dew – an Irish whiskey distilled by Tullamore Distillery – that can be traced back to 1829. The original distillery was shut down in 1954, with the brand later being resurrected and produced at the Midleton Distillery, in Cork. 2019 Irish Local Elections
The 2019 Irish local elections were held in all local authorities in Ireland on Friday, 24 May 2019, on the same day as the 2019 European Parliament election and a referendum easing restrictions on divorce. Each local government area is divided into local electoral areas (LEAs) where three to seven councillors are elected on the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote. Administrative changes There was one change to the local government areas since the 2014 elections, with a transfer of land from County Cork to Cork city under the Local Government Act 2019. Reviews of the county boundaries near Drogheda, Athlone, and Carlow ( Graiguecullen) recommended no change. Offaly was a parliamentary constituency represented in Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament or Oireachtas, from 2016 to 2020. The constituency elected three deputies ( Teachtaí Dála, commonly known as TDs). The method of election was proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote (PR-STV). History and boundaries The Constituency Commission proposed in its 2012 report that at the next general election a new constituency called Offaly be created. The report proposed changes to the constituencies of Ireland so as to reduce the total number of TDs from 166 to 158. It was established by the Electoral (Amendment) (Dáil Constituencies) Act 2013. The constituency incorporated all of County Offaly from the previous Laois–Offaly constituency, and additionally twenty-four electoral divisions from Tipperary North. 2016 Irish General Election
The 2016 Irish general election took place on Friday 26 February to elect 158 Teachtaí Dála (TDs) across Dáil constituencies, 40 constituencies to Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Oireachtas, Republic of Ireland, Ireland's parliament. The 31st Dáil was dissolved by President of Ireland, President Michael D. Higgins on 3 February, at the request of Taoiseach Enda Kenny. There was a reduction of eight seats under the Electoral (Amendment) (Dáil Constituencies) Act 2013. Following the election, Kenny's Fine Gael with 50 of the 158 seats available remained the largest party in the Dáil despite having lost 26 seats.
