Irian (horse)
Irian (; foaled 9 May 2006) is a German-bred, Hong Kong–based retired racehorse. He was one of the nominees of 2010–2011 Hong Kong Horse of the Year. Background Irian is a brown gelding bred in Germany by Gestut Schlenderhan. He is probably the best offspring of his sire, the German Group Three winner Tertullian. Racing career Irian was sent into training with J Hirschberger in Germany, where he raced as a three-year-old in 2009. He won three races, including the Dr. Busch-Memorial and the Mehl-Mülhens-Rennen. In 2010, Irian resumed his career in Hong Kong, racing at Sha Tin Racecourse. In November 2010, he defeated 10 opponents to win the Jockey Club Cup. Tertullian (horse)
Tertullian (; ; 155 – 220 AD) was a prolific early Christian author from Carthage in the Roman province of Africa. He was the first Christian author to produce an extensive corpus of Latin Christian literature and was an early Christian apologist and a polemicist against heresy, including contemporary Christian Gnosticism. Tertullian was the first theologian to write in Latin, and so has been called "the father of Latin Christianity", as well as " the founder of Western theology". He is perhaps most famous for being the first writer in Latin known to use the term ''trinity'' (Latin: ''trinitas''). Tertullian originated new theological concepts and advanced the development of early Church doctrine. However, some of his teachings, such as the subordination of the Son and Spirit to the Father, were later rejected by the Church. Sha Tin Racecourse
Sha Tin Racecourse is one of the two racecourses for horse racing in Hong Kong. It is located in Sha Tin District, Sha Tin in the New Territories. It is managed by Hong Kong Jockey Club. Penfold Park is encircled by the track, and the Hong Kong Sports Institute is located immediately south of the property. Michael Jackson planned to perform at the racecourse on his Dangerous World Tour, which was the start of the third leg, but it did not materialize due to the dates conflicting with the racing season. History The racecourse was built in 1978 (under the administration of Sir David Akers-Jones, the then-Secretary for the New Territories) on reclaimed land and is the larger of the two tracks in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Jockey Club
The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) was founded in 1884 and is one of the oldest institutions in Hong Kong. In 1960, it was granted a royal charter and renamed The Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club (). The institution reverted to its original name in 1996 due to the handover of Hong Kong in 1997. Membership of the club is by nomination and election. It is a non-profit organisation providing horse racing, sporting and betting entertainment in Hong Kong. California Memory
California Memory () is an American-bred Hong Kong–based Thoroughbred racehorse. He was one of the nominees of 2010–2011 Hong Kong Horse of the Year. Background California Memory is a grey gelding sired by Highest Honor out of the mare Kalpita. Racing career Acquired by Spanish buyers, California Memory began his racing career in both Spain and France named Portus Blendium and was trained by a Spanish trainer based in Chantilly, Carlos Laffon-Parias. He won one race from four starts as a three-year-old in 2009. California Memory was sold and exported to Hong Kong. He finished unplaced on his only start of 2010. In 2011 he became one of Hong Kong's most successful racehorses, winning important races including the Hong Kong Gold Cup, the Sha Tin Trophy and the Hong Kong Cup. Snow Fairy
Snow Fairy (foaled 12 February 2007) is a retired Thoroughbred racehorse who was bred in Ireland and trained in England by Ed Dunlop. She made little impression on the racecourse as a two-year-old, winning only one race out of six. She started her three-year-old season well, winning a listed race. Snow Fairy then started Epsom Oaks, The Oaks at 12/1. Ridden by Ryan Moore (jockey), Ryan Moore, she won by a neck. Again ridden by Moore, she won the Irish Oaks easily. When taking on older horses for the first time in the Yorkshire Oaks, she finished second to Midday (horse), Midday. Following a run in the St Leger Stakes, St Leger, she went to Japan and won the Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Cup followed by the Hong Kong Cup. Hong Kong Cup
The Hong Kong Cup is a Conditions races, Group 1 Flat racing, flat Horse racing, horse race in Hong Kong which is open to thoroughbreds aged three years or older. It is run over a distance of 2000 metres (about miles or 10 furlongs) at Sha Tin Racecourse, Sha Tin, each year in mid-December. The race was first run on 24 January 1988, and its distance was initially set at 1800 metres. The inaugural running was restricted to horses trained in Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore. Added to this list for the following season were horses from Australia and New Zealand. The race was switched to December for its third running, therefore taking place twice within 1989. Horses trained in Europe were admitted in 1990, followed by those from the United States in 1991, and Canada and Japan in 1992. Miswaki
Miswaki (February 22, 1978 – December 17, 2004) was an American-bred Thoroughbred racehorse that was a Group One winner in France and a stakes race winner in the United States. He was an important sire of 97 stakes race winners and was the Leading broodmare sire in Great Britain and Ireland in 1999 and 2001. Breeding and ownership Bred in Florida, Miswaki was sired by the very important Mr. Prospector that became a two-time leading sire in North America and a nine-time leading broodmare sire in North America. His dam was Hopespringseternal, a daughter of Buckpasser, the 1966 American Horse of the Year and Hall of Fame inductee that became a four-time leading broodmare sire in North America. Miswaki was purchased and raced by Etti Plesch, a prominent horsewoman in Europe, who as at the end of 2011, is the only female to have won The Derby twice, doing it first in 1961 with Psidium then with Henbit in 1980.
