Goa Liberation Day
Goa, Daman and Diu Liberation Day is observed annually on 19 December in Goa, India. It is celebrated to mark the Indian Armed Forces' annexation of Goa from the Portuguese government in 1961, after which India was free of any European rule. Background Goa was annexed by the Indian Armed Forces on 19 December 1961 after 451 years of Portuguese rule. Millions died in genocides, including the Holocaust, and by massacres, starvation, and disease. After the Allied victory, Germany, Austria, Japan, and Korea were occupied, and German and Japanese leaders were tried for war crimes. The causes of World War II included unresolved tensions in the aftermath of World War I and the rise of fascism in Europe and militarism in Japan. Key events preceding the war included ...
