Irene Foote was an international lawn bowls competitor for New Zealand. Bowls career World Championships Foote won three gold medals in the triples with Noeleen Scott and Cis Winstanley, the fours with Scott, Winstanley and Verna Devlin and the team event (Taylor Trophy) at the 1973 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Wellington, New Zealand. World Bowls Championship
The World Bowls Championship is the premier world bowls competition between national bowls organisations. World Outdoor Championships First held in Australia in 1966, the World Outdoor Bowls Championships for men and women are held every four years. From 2008 the men's and women's events were held together. Qualifying national bowls organisations (usually countries) are represented by a team of five players, who play once as a single and a four, then again as a pair and a triple. Gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded in each of the four disciplines, and there is also a trophy for the best overall team — the Leonard Trophy for men and the Taylor Trophy for women. Northern Ireland & the Republic of Ireland compete as one combined Irish team. The 2020 event was postponed twice and scheduled for 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Lawn Bowls
Bowls, also known as lawn bowls or lawn bowling, is a sport in which players try to roll their ball (called a bowl) closest to a smaller ball (known as a "jack" or sometimes a "kitty"). The bowls are shaped (biased), so that they follow a curved path when being rolled. The game is played either in teams or one against one. The game was first played in the 13th century. The game is played on grass, although other surfaces are sometimes used. Matches are held either until one player gets to a score, or when a number of ''ends'' are played. Noeleen Scott
Noeleen Mollison Scott (née Thomson; 31 October 1926 – 5 October 2023) was a New Zealand lawn bowls player. She won world triples and fours titles in 1973, and was inducted into the Bowls New Zealand Hall of Fame in 2013. Early life and family Scott was born Noeleen Mollison Thomson on 31 October 1926, the daughter of Georgina Elsie and Harry Cuthbert Thomson. The family lived in Mosgiel, and her mother died in January 1930. She married Bill Scott, who was a member of the Cromwell Bowling Club and won the nation pairs title in 1964. Bowls career Having seen her husband play bowls, Scott decided to take up the sport. She quickly rose through the playing ranks, and finished second in the singles at the 1965 national bowls championship. She went on to win the national singles title in 1977, and was again runner-up in 1981. Cissie Winstanley (née Lithgow, 26 December 1908 – 25 July 2006) was an international lawn bowls competitor for New Zealand. Bowls career She won the triples and fours gold medal at the 1973 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Wellington, New Zealand and also won the gold medal in the team event (Taylor Trophy). Four years later she won a silver medal in the triples at the 1977 World Outdoor Bowls Championship in Worthing, England. An additional bronze medal was won in the team event.
