It originated from American hip hop culture, but has developed into a distinct rap style that draws on Iranian cultural concepts and engages with the modern issues Iranians are facing today. The Iranian Revolution (, ), also known as the 1979 Revolution, or the Islamic Revolution of 1979 (, ) was a series of events that culminated in the overthrow of the Pahlavi dynasty in 1979. Mahdyar Aghajani
Mahdyar Aghajani (; born 22 January 1989) is a musician, record producer and composer born and raised in Tehran, Iran. He raised the standard of Iranian underground music, using Persian traditional instruments (such as oud, santoor, daf, tombak, ney, kamancheh and qanoon) in electronic and hip hop music. Career In 2006 Hichkas released the first Iranian hip hop album ''Jangale Asfalt (The Asphalt Jungle)''. Jangale Asfalt (album)
''The Asphalt Jungle'' () is the debut studio album by Iranian rapper Hichkas, released unauthorized and underground on 1st October 2006. Written by Hichkas and produced by Mahdyar Aghajani, it is considered as the first professional Iranian hip hop album. Background The album was composed by Mahdyar Aghajani who was 18 at the time. This album is a combination of hip hop and traditional Iranian music (for example Persian instruments were used). Three tracks of this album have been performed in English with the collaboration of Reveal, a British rapper of Iranian descent. Composition The album was originally released in 2006 in Iran. A diss track, diss record or diss song (an abbreviation of ''disrespect'' or ''disparage'') is a song whose primary purpose is to verbally attack someone else, usually another artist. Toomaj Salehi
Toomaj Salehi (; born 3 December 1990) is an Iranian rapper mainly known for his protest songs concerning Iran's societal issues and the policies of the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran. In July 2023, the Iranian Government sentenced Salehi to six years in prison for participating in the 2022 Iran protests. On 24 April 2024, Salehi was sentenced to death for charges linked to Iran's 2022–23 Woman, Life, Freedom movement. The sentence was overturned in June 2024, and he was released from prison on 2 December 2024 having served his prison sentence. On June 19th 2025 Toomaj was reported to be detained by unknown forces and his location is not know according to a post on X.
