Ira Landrith
Ira Landrith (March 23, 1865 – October 11, 1941) was an American Presbyterian minister and temperance activist. A known orator, Landrith was part of the Flying Squadron of America, which traveled the United States advocating for temperance. Life Landrith was educated at Trinity University and Cumberland University. From 1893 to 1894 he served as the general secretary of the Religious Education Association and as general secretary of the Presbyterian Brotherhood of America from 1907 to 1909. He served as president of Belmont College (now University) from 1904 to 1912, of Ward Seminary from 1912 to 1913, and of Ward-Belmont College from 1913 to 1915. In 1914, he became a member of the Flying Squadron of America and from 1915 to 1925 served as a lecturer for the Anti-Saloon League and World League Against Alcoholism. Milford, Texas
Milford is an incorporated rural community located in North Central Texas, in the southwestern corner of Ellis County, in the United States. The population was 722 at the 2020 census. The town is located northeast of Hillsboro and southwest of Waxahachie. The community received media attention due to a Chevron gas pipeline explosion and resulting town evacuation which occurred in 2013. History Settlement and early history Milford dates back to the 1850s, when several men from Cherokee County came to the Mill Creek valley and bought land at 50 cents an acre from Ellis County landowner Arvin Wright. Milford was named by William R. Hudson after the factory town of Milford, Massachusetts. During 1853 the first house, a combined residence and general store belonging to William R. Frank Hanly
James Franklin Hanly (April 4, 1863August 1, 1920) was an American politician who served as a congressman from Indiana from 1895 until 1897, and was the 26th governor of Indiana from 1905 to 1909. He was the founder of Hanly's Flying Squadron, which advocated prohibition nationally and played an important role in arousing public support for prohibition. During his term as governor he successfully advocated the passage of a local-option liquor law, which led the majority of Indiana's counties to ban liquor sales. His other achievements included banning gambling, fighting political corruption, and adjusting state agencies to operate on a non-partisan basis. He left office and the Republican Party and became an active and vocal prohibitionist. He was an unsuccessful Prohibition Party candidate for President of the United States in the 1916 election. National Temperance Council
The National Temperance Council was established in 1913 to coordinate the activities of numerous organizations in the temperance movement. Its purpose included the promotion of alcohol education. Its goal was the ratification of an amendment to the United States Constitution outlawing the manufacture, distribution and sale of alcoholic beverages throughout the country. The National Temperance Council stated that it represented 14-15 million American citizens and had a membership of "22 organizations, church boards, and commissions", with representatives from major Christian denominations. Intercollegiate Prohibition Association
The Intercollegiate Prohibition Association was established in Chicago, Illinois, in 1901 and by 1903 was reported to be the largest college organization in the United States. It conducted "an inquiry" among 158 colleges and universities in 1923 and reported that 136 institutions were in favor of prohibition, eight were against it, and 14 were undetermined. It additionally reported that at 80 out of the 136 institutions in favor of prohibition, support was either by an overwhelming majority or was unanimous. In 1934, a year after the repeal of prohibition, the name was changed to the Intercollegiate Association for the Study of Alcohol.
