Ira Jacob Palestin (September 4, 1899 – April 30, 1997) was a Jewish-American American Labor Party, American Labor and Liberal Party of New York, Liberal Party lawyer and politician who served on the New York City Council from 1946 to 1949, representing the Bronx. When Palestin was elected in 1945 alongside Louis P. Goldberg, they became the first elected officials of the Liberal Party of New York. Biography Born in New York City in 1899, Palestin served in World War I and attended the City College of New York and Columbia Law School. He was admitted to the New York State Bar Association, New York State Bar in 1924 and practiced law for over 20 years. During World War II, he served as a volunteer appeals attorney for the Office of Price Administration. Palestin's first encounter with electoral politics came in 1943, when he was nominated for New York Supreme Court, State Supreme Court by the American Labor Party. New York City Council
The New York City Council is the lawmaking body of New York City in the United States. It has 51 members from 51 council districts throughout the five boroughs. The council serves as a check against the mayor in a mayor-council government model, the performance of city agencies' land use decisions, and legislating on a variety of other issues. It also has sole responsibility for approving the city budget. Members elected are limited to two consecutive four-year terms in office but may run again after a four-year respite. The head of the city council is called the speaker. The current speaker is Adrienne Adams, a Democrat from the 28th district in Queens. The speaker sets the agenda and presides at city council meetings, and all proposed legislation is submitted through the Speaker's Office.
