Iqaluit Public Transit
The Iqaluit Public Transit system operated from July 2003 to January 2005 to provide public transportation in Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada. Mounting costs and low ridership forced city council to cancel the service in late 2004 and it ceased operations in January 2005. History Iqaluit previously operated bus services in the 1980s, and again during the Arctic Winter Games. After paying approximately $137,000 for the service, the city had concluded that if they were to give taxi vouchers to every resident they would save almost $100,000 annually. Iqaluit had a 5-year contract with the R.L. Hanson Construction company to operate the service. Iqaluit
Iqaluit is the capital of the Canadian territory of Nunavut. It is the territory's largest community and its only city, and the northernmost city in Canada. It was known as Frobisher Bay from 1942 to 1987, after the large bay on the coast on which the city is situated. Its traditional Inuktitut name was restored in 1987. In 1999, Iqaluit was designated the capital of Nunavut after the division of the Northwest Territories into two separate territories. Before this event, Iqaluit was a small city and not well known outside the Canadian Arctic or Canada, with population and economic growth highly limited. Nunavut
Nunavut is the largest and northernmost Provinces and territories of Canada#Territories, territory of Canada. The Arctic Winter Games are a biennial multi-sport and indigenous cultural event involving circumpolar peoples residing in communities or countries bordering the Arctic Ocean. History The Arctic Winter Games were founded in 1969 under the leadership of Alaska Governor Walter J. Hickel, Stuart (Stu) M. Hodgson, Commissioner of the Northwest Territories, and James Smith, Commissioner of Yukon. The idea to "provide a forum where athletes from the ''circumpolar North'' could compete on their own terms, on their own turf" came from Cal Miller, an advisor with the Yukon team at the 1967 Canada Winter Games. Apex, Iqaluit
Apex (Inuktitut ''Niaqunngut'') is a small community in Iqaluit located on Baffin Island in Nunavut, Canada. It is about southeast of Iqaluit on a small peninsula separating Koojesse (Kuujussi) Inlet from Tarr Inlet. Historically Apex was the place where most Inuit lived when Frobisher Bay Air Base, Iqaluit was a military site and was off-limits to anyone not working at the base. The community is accessed by bridge or causeway, and bordered by a local creek (''kuujuusi'') and waterfall (''kugluktuk''). Located here are the women's shelter, a church, Nanook Elementary School, and a bed-and-breakfast, along with housing for about 60 families. Iqaluit Airport
Iqaluit Airport () serves Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada and is located adjacent to the city. It hosts Airline, scheduled passenger service from Ottawa, Rankin Inlet, and Kuujjuaq on carriers such as Canadian North, and from smaller communities throughout eastern Nunavut. It is also used as a forward operating base by the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). In 2011, the terminal handled more than 120,000 passengers. The airport is classified as an airport of entry by Nav Canada and is staffed by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). ''Nunatsiaq News'' () is a Canadian weekly newspaper in operation since 1973 based in Iqaluit, serving as the newspaper of record for the territory of Nunavut and the Nunavik region of Quebec. The paper is published online on a daily basis, and in print on a weekly basis by Nortext Publishing Corporation. Co-op stores in Nunavut and Nunavik distribute the newspaper free of charge. Most content is produced in English and Inuktitut, with some French language content and the occasional article in Inuinnaqtun. Although circulation figures are not listed, the newspaper claimed to have the largest circulation in Nunavut and says they reach over 50,000 readers including website visitors. Ford B-Series
The Ford B series is a bus chassis that was manufactured by the Ford Motor Company. Produced across six generations from 1948 to 1998, the B series was a variant of the medium-duty Ford F series. As a cowled-chassis design, the B series was a bare chassis aft of the firewall, intended for bodywork from a second-stage manufacturer. While primarily used for school bus applications in the United States and Canada, the chassis was exported worldwide to manufacturers to construct bus bodies for various uses.
