Cansado
Cansado () is a coastal town in north-western Mauritania on the Ras Nouadhibou peninsula. It is located in the Nouadhibou Department in the Dakhlet Nouadhibou region. It was built from scratch in the early 1960s for the staff administering the port and railhead for the iron ore mining company MIFERMA (Societe Anonyme des Mines de Fer de Mauritanie) as part of their iron mine development project at Zouérate. Kiaone
Kiaone are two offshore sandy islets in the Bay of Arguin, Mauritania, the islet is very small. The large islet is 1.2 km to 300 meters long and 12 to 15 meters wide, the smaller one named Petite Kiaone is 450 meters long and 50 meters wide. The island is part of the Banc d'Arguin National Park. During low tilde the islets form a large single island. The islet is not populated. Nearby islets includes Echakcher to the north-northeast and Niroumi to further to the southwest. Some 4 kilometres to the east is the Mauritanian mainland and nearby are the town or city of Ten-Alloul in the east, further north is the Iwik Peninsula. Several different types of birds including the pink flamingos migrate in the area, they first migrated in 1957. During the prehistoric era, the islets was once connected to the mainland until some 6,000 to 5,000 years ago when the rise of the sea level split it from the mainland. Akjoujt
Akjoujt (Arabic: أكجوجت) is a small city in western Mauritania. It is the capital of the Inchiri region. "Akjoujt" (ɑk'ʤuʤt) means 'wells'. The city's main industry is gold and copper mining. History Archeologists have discovered that as early as 1000 BC, copper smelting and mining was occurring in Akjoujt. According to archeologist Nicole N. Lambert, metallurgical traces and discovery sites proves relation between Mauritanian metallurgy and the introduction of Berbers into the western Sahara and the Sahel. In 1992, the city's old copper mine was repurposed into a gold mine. The company, Mines d'Or d'Akjoujt (MORAK), which was government-subsidized, was using many volatile and dangerous chemicals in the mines, and livestock and other animals in the area began to die. The runoff from the mine was stored in a plastic-lined retention pond and was very close to the city's water supply.
