Iona Gaels
The Iona Gaels are the athletics teams of Iona University, in New Rochelle, New York. They compete in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and participate in 21 NCAA Division I programs. Varsity athletic programs Men's basketball Iona University has been competing in men's basketball since the inception of the school in 1940. Iona is an original member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, which began play in men's basketball with the 1981–82 season. The Gaels have compiled the most victories of any MAAC team since the founding of the conference and have won a league record seven MAAC titles. During their history, the Gaels have participated in 15 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championships compiling a record of 1–15. Iona University
Iona University () is a private Catholic university with a main campus in New Rochelle, New York, United States. It was founded in 1940 by the Congregation of Christian Brothers and occupies a campus of in New Rochelle and a campus of in Bronxville, New York. College Of The Holy Cross
The College of the Holy Cross is a private Jesuit liberal arts college in Worcester, Massachusetts, United States. It was founded by educators Benedict Joseph Fenwick and Thomas F. Jeff Ruland
Jeffrey George Ruland (born December 16, 1958) is an American former professional basketball player and coach, best known for his tenure as a player in the NBA which saw him selected to two All-Star games. After playing college basketball for Iona, he started his professional career with FC Barcelona in the Liga ACB. Following his playing career, he coached the Iona Gaels men's basketball team and the UDC Firebirds men's college basketball team. Tim Welsh
Tim Welsh (born October 4, 1960) is an American college basketball coach and the former head basketball coach at Providence College. Previously, he served as the head coach at Iona College. He also served briefly as head men's basketball coach at Hofstra University. He now serves as an analyst for ESPN. Background Born in Massena, New York, Welsh is a 1984 graduate of SUNY Potsdam, where he played basketball for his father, Jerry. He was previously the men's basketball coach at Towson University, Iona College (New York), Iona College, Florida State University, DePaul University, Pace University and the University of Montana - Missoula, University of Montana. Jim Valvano
James Thomas Anthony Valvano (March 10, 1946 – April 28, 1993), nicknamed Jimmy V, was an American college basketball player, coach, and broadcaster. Valvano had a successful coaching career with multiple schools, culminating at NC State. While the head coach at NC State, his team won the 1983 NCAA Division I men's basketball title against improbable odds. Valvano is remembered for his ecstatic celebration after winning the national championship game against the heavily favored Houston Cougars. Valvano is also remembered for an inspirational and memorable speech delivered at the 1993 ESPY Awards while terminally ill with cancer. Jim McDermott (basketball)
Peter James McDermott (April 6, 1910 – June 2, 2009) was an American basketball and baseball coach and college athletics administrator. He served as the head basketball coach at Iona College in New Rochelle, New York from 1947 to 1973, compiling a record of 320–252. McDermott was also the head baseball coach at Iona from 1947 to 1963 and the school's athletic director from 1956 to 1976. The Iowa State Cyclones are the intercollegiate athletic teams that represent Iowa State University, located in Ames.
