Intron Depot 1
is a collection of Masamune Shirow's full color works. The volume itself is 148 210 mm x 285 mm pages. It encompasses 226 illustrations from 1981 to 1991, 193 of which are in full color. It is a wide ranging collection, as one might expect from a work surveying 10 years of a professional artist’s life. The foreword written by Masamune Shirow indicates that only a small sample of works is not represented, some works done for fanzines, or sent off to other individuals, and 34 color pages were left out from ''Ghost in the Shell'' because he felt that might devalue that work. Everything from '' Appleseed'' to '' Orion'' are well represented in ''Intron Depot 1'', some pictures are reproductions of paintings, others book covers, manga pages, or drafts. Cyberpunk
Cyberpunk is a subgenre of science fiction in a dystopian Futurism, futuristic setting that tends to focus on a "combination of low-life, lowlife and high tech", featuring futuristic technological and scientific achievements, such as artificial intelligence and cybernetics, juxtaposed with societal collapse, dystopia or decay. Masamune Shirow
, better known by his pen name , is a Japanese manga artist. Shirow is best known for the manga ''Ghost in the Shell'', which has since been turned into three theatrical anime films, two anime television series, an anime television movie, an anime ONA series, a theatrical live action movie, and several video games. Life and career Born in the Hyōgo Prefecture capital city of Kobe, he studied oil painting at Osaka University of Arts. is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Masamune Shirow. The series follows the adventures of ESWAT members Deunan Knute and Briareos Hecatonchires in Olympus. Like much of Shirow's work, ''Appleseed'' merges elements of the cyberpunk and mecha genres with politics, philosophy, and sociology. The series spans four volumes, released between 1985 and 1989. It has been adapted into an original video animation, three feature films, a 13-episode TV series, and two video games. In 1986, ''Appleseed'' reserved the 17th Seiun Award for Best Manga. is a manga by Masamune Shirow, first serialized in 1990 and 1991 in Seishinsha ''Comic Gaia'' magazine. Mecha
In science fiction, or mechs are giant robots or machines controlled by people, typically depicted as humanoid walking vehicles. The term was first used in Japanese (language), Japanese after shortening the English loanword or , but the meaning in Japanese is more inclusive, and or 'giant robot' is the narrower term. Fictional mecha vary greatly in size and shape, but are distinguished from vehicles by their humanoid or Biorobotics, biomorphic appearance, although they are bigger, often much bigger, than human beings. Black Magic (manga)
is a cyberpunk manga written and illustrated by Masamune Shirow. It was first published as a ''dōjinshi'' in 1983, and was later reprinted in ''tankōbon'' format by Seishinsha in 1985. The series was later adapted into an OVA in 1987 which was directed by Hiroyuki Kitakubo. AIC and Animate provided the animation/production while Bandai Visual was chosen as the distributor. The OVA is very loosely based on one of the chapters of the manga and centers around the efforts of a female journalist named Sybel, trying to save a young girl from an out-of-control military android created by the girl's grandfather. Set in the fictional city of Newport, Japan, in a future in which bacteria as well as air pollution have become so severe that people must wear gas masks when outdoors, the series follows a police squadron that uses military-style tanks. ''Dominion'' has been adapted into three original video animation series: the first was released in 1988, the second, in 1993, and the third, in 2006. The 1988 OVA is four episodes long and animated by Agent 21, the 1993 OVA is six episodes long and animated by J.C.Staff, while ''TANK S.W.A.T.'' is one episode long and was animated by DOGA Productions.
