Interstate 73 (I-73) is a north–south Interstate Highway, currently located entirely within the US state of North Carolina. It travels , from northwest of Rockingham, North Carolina to northeast of Stokesdale, North Carolina, Stokesdale, providing a freeway connection to Greensboro, North Carolina, Greensboro and Asheboro, North Carolina, Asheboro. Other than a short segment near the Piedmont Triad International Airport west of Greensboro, the interstate runs concurrently with at least one other route. I-73 was planned to be a much longer corridor, defined by various federal laws to run from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. North Carolina continues to build sections of the route, while South Carolina has shown support for building it but is still searching for funds. Concurrency (road)
In a road network, a concurrency is an instance of one physical roadway bearing two or more different route numbers. The practice is often economically and practically advantageous when multiple routes must pass between a single mountain crossing or over a bridge, or through a major city, and can be accommodated by a single right-of-way. Each route number is typically posted on highways signs where concurrencies are allowed, while some jurisdictions simplify signage by posting one priority route number on highway signs. Interstate 73 In Virginia
Interstate 73 (I-73) was a planned Interstate Highway in Virginia. Authorized by the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991 (ISTEA), Virginia's section would begin at the North Carolina state line and follow the U.S. Route 220 (US 220) corridor through Martinsville and Roanoke, then westerly into West Virginia, possibly along Corridor Q. Since its inception, environmental studies have been completed; but, because it scores low for project jobs in the state, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has shelved plans for the foreseeable future. Interstate 73 (I-73) is a partially completed Interstate Highway in the US state of North Carolina, traversing the state from northwest of Rockingham to near Summerfield through Asheboro and Greensboro. When completed, it will continue south toward Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and north to Price, North Carolina at the Virginia-North Carolina border. Standards for Interstate Highways in the United States are defined by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) in the publication ''A Policy on Design Standards: Interstate System''. For a certain highway to be considered an Interstate Highway, it must meet these construction requirements or obtain a waiver from the Federal Highway Administration.
