International Repair Day
International Repair Day was established in 2017 to promote the value and importance of repairing, including at community events like Repair Cafés or Restart Parties. The event occurs annually on the third Saturday in October. The first International Repair Day was organised on 21 October 2017. The second International Repair Day took place on 20 October 2018. The 2018 event focused on the right to repair: the right to access information and resources needed for repair, and the need for products to be more durable, efficient and repairable. Repair Café
Repair Café is an organisation with venues set up to provide people with a place to work on repairing objects of everyday life, such as electronics, mechanical devices, computers, bicycles, and clothing. Repair Cafés are typically held at community locations including churches, libraries, and college campuses where tools are available and device owners can fix their broken goods with the help of volunteers. Repair Café is a part of a grassroots movement that aims to reduce waste, overconsumption, and planned obsolescence. A repairable component is a component of a finished good that can be designated for repair. Overview Repairable components tend to be more expensive than non-repairable components (consumables). This is because for items that are inexpensive to procure, it is often more cost-effective not to maintain (repair) them. Repair costs can be expensive, including costs for the labor for the removal the broken or worn out part (described as unserviceable), cost of replacement with a working (serviceable) from inventory, and also the cost of the actual repair, including possible shipping costs to a repair vendor.
