The International Harp Contest in Israel is a harp competition. Founded in 1959 by Aharon Zvi Propes in the city of Jerusalem Jerusalem is a city in the Southern Levant, on a plateau in the Judaean Mountains between the Mediterranean Sea, Mediterranean and the Dead Sea. Sivan Magen
Sivan Magen (born 1980) is an Israeli harpist. Raised in Jerusalem in a musical family, the child of two cellists, Magen started his musical studies at the piano with Benjamin Oren and Talma Cohen, and first tried the harp when his family moved to France for a sabbatical. He continued his harp studies with Irena Kaganovski-Kessler in the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance. Later he moved to France on his own, where his teachers included Germaine Lorenzini. Magen studied at the Conservatoire National Superieure in Paris, under the guidance of Isabelle Moretti, where he was a ''Premier Prix'' winner. Magen continued his studies at the Juilliard School with Nancy Allen, and earned a Master's degree. In 2006, he became the first, and to date only, Israeli to win the International Harp Contest in Israel. In 2012, Magen won the Borletti-Buitoni Trust award. Harp Competitions
The harp is a stringed musical instrument that has individual strings running at an angle to its soundboard; the strings are plucked with the fingers. Harps can be made and played in various ways, standing or sitting, and in orchestras or concerts. Its most common form is triangular in shape and made of wood. Some have multiple rows of strings and pedal attachments. Ancient depictions of harps were recorded in Mesopotamia (now Iraq), Persia (now Iran) and Egypt, and later in India and China. Benjamin Britten
Edward Benjamin Britten, Baron Britten of Aldeburgh (22 November 1913 – 4 December 1976) was an English composer, conductor, and pianist. Marcel Grandjany
Marcel Georges Lucien Grandjany ( ) (3 September 1891 – 24 February 1975) was a French-American harpist and composer. Biography Early life Marcel Grandjany was born in Paris and began the study of the harp at the age of eight with Henriette Renié. At age eleven, he was admitted to the Conservatoire de Paris, where he studied with Alphonse Hasselmans, winning the coveted Premier Prix at age thirteen. Career At seventeen he made his debut with the Concerts Lamoureux Orchestra, and gave his first solo recital, winning immediate acclaim. He appeared with Maurice Ravel in Paris in 1913. His London debut was in 1922 and his New York debut in 1924. André Jolivet
André Jolivet (; 8 August 1905 – 20 December 1974) was a French composer. Known for his devotion to French culture and musical thought, Jolivet drew on his interest in acoustics and atonality, as well as both ancient and modern musical influences, particularly on instruments used in ancient times. He composed in a wide variety of forms for many different types of ensembles. Henriette Renié
Henriette Renié (; 18 September 1875 – 1 March 1956) was a French harpist and composer who is known for her many original compositions and transcriptions, as well as codifying a method for harp that is still used today. She was a musical prodigy who excelled in harp performance from a young age, advancing through her training rapidly and receiving several prestigious awards in her youth. She was an exceptional instructor and contributed to the success of many students. She gained prominence as a woman in an era where fame was socially unacceptable for women. Her devotion to her religion, her family, her students, and her music has continued to influence and inspire musicians for decades. Remy van Kesteren (8 March 1989) is a Dutch harpist and artistic director of the Dutch Harp Festival. Education Remy van Kesteren was admitted to the Utrechts Conservatorium into a class taught by at the age of ten and he graduated with the highest distinction in 2010. He continued his training at the Conservatoire de Paris, where he was inspired by the famous harpist Isabelle Moretti. Varvara Ivanova (; born 1987) is a Russian virtuoso harpist and winner of major prizes in many international harp competitions. Biography She was born in Moscow in 1987 and grew up in a family of musicians, with her father baritone Vladimir Ivanov, her mother harpist Zoya Slootskovskaya, and her brothers pianist Gleb Ivanov and cellist Danila Ivanov. From the age of five she studied at the Preparatory of Moscow Conservatory under M. F. Maslennikova.
