InterAccess (Internet Service Provider)
InterAccess is a Canadian artist-run centre and electronic media production facility in Toronto. The Centre for Contemporary Canadian Art places the founding of InterAccess as a key moment in both the history of Canadian electronic art but also within a timeline of developments in international art, science, technology and culture. History In August 1981, Bill Perry and Ric Amis started Telidon at Trinity Square Video, with a Norpak Telidon Information Provider System given to Perry by Bell Canada. Perry, Nina Beveridge and Geoffrey Shea secured operational funding and premises to establish a separate, artist run organization called Toronto Community Videotex (TCV), incorporated in March of 1983. Later in 1983, InterAccess was incorporated as a not-for-profit, artist-run access centre. The founding directors were Perry, Beveridge, Shea and Paul Petro. An artist-run space or artist-run centre (Canada) is a gallery or other facility operated or directed by artists, frequently circumventing the structures of public art centers, museums, or commercial galleries and allowing for a more experimental program. An artist-run initiative (ARI) is any project run by artists, including Sound art, sound or visual artists, to present their and others' projects. David Rokeby
David Rokeby (born 1960) is a Canadian artist who has been making works of electronic art, electronic, video art, video and installation art since 1982. He lives with his wife, acclaimed pianist Eve Egoyan, in Toronto, Canada. His early work ''Very Nervous System'' (1982–1991) is acknowledged as a pioneering work of interactive art, translating physical gestures into real-time interactive sound environments. Artist-run Centres
Canadian artist-run centres (ARC or ARCs) are galleries and art spaces developed by artists in Canada since the 1960s. The artist-run centre is the common term of use for artist-initiated and managed organizations in Canada. Most centres follow the not-for-profit arts organization model, do not charge admission fees, pay artists for their contributions (exhibitions, presentations, performances) are non-commercial and de-emphasize the selling of artwork. Janine Marchessault
Janine Marchessault is a professor of Cinema and Media Studies and Canada Research Chair (2003-2013) at York University in Toronto, Canada. Her main fields of research are Ecologies of Media and Mediation, (sub)urban cultures, the works of Marshall McLuhan, contemporary art exhibitions, Expo 67, artists' cultures, new media technologies, media archives, city and its sustainability issues. She is also a Trudeau Fellow. Yonge Street ( ') is a major arterial route in the Canadian province of Ontario connecting the shores of Lake Ontario in Toronto to Lake Simcoe, a gateway to the Great Lakes#Geography, Upper Great Lakes. Norman White
Norman White (born January 7, 1938, San Antonio Texas) is a Canadian new media artist considered to be a pioneer in the use of electronic technology and robotics in art. Life White was born in San Antonio Texas in 1938. He grew up in and around Boston, Massachusetts, and obtained his B.A. in Biology from Harvard University in 1959. Originally planning to become a fisheries biologist, White changed his mind and decided to travel to places like New York City, San Francisco, London, and the Middle East during the 1960s. While living in San Francisco, he worked as an electrician at Hunter's Point Naval Shipyard, and developed a fascination for electrical switching systems. In London England, 1965-1967, he began to experiment with electronics. He then moved to Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where he began creating a series of kinetic, digital logic driven light machines. Nell Tenhaaf
Nell Tenhaaf (born in 1951 in Oshawa, Ontario) is a Canadian artist, teacher, writer and feminist. Nell received a B.F.A. in 1974 and a M.F.A. in 1989 both from Concordia University, Montreal, Quebec. The bulk of Tenhaaf’s art was produced during the time that she lived in Montreal, Quebec (since 1969); however, her work has been exhibited not only in Canada, but also in the United States and Europe. Today, Nell Tenhaaf lives in Trent Hills, Ontario and is Professor Emeritus in the Visual Arts and Computational Arts departments of York University. Practice Tenhaaf writes and makes art on subjects related to science, biotechnology and artificial life. Her practice also focuses on gender issues regarding electronic media and computer technologies as well as science exploration through art practice, keeping even the feminist works within the scientific realm in order to incorporate female origin stories while agitating the rational locus of science.
