Ingenieurkontor Lübeck
Ulrich Gabler (1 October 1913 – 24 February 1994) was a German shipbuilding engineer, who specialized in the design and development of diesel-powered submarines. During World War II he served as chief engineer in the U-boat force on and , then under the command of Reinhard Suhren. Suhren had recommended Gabler for the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross, a request that was turned down and Gabler received the German Cross in Gold on 15 October 1942. Following his war patrols on ''U-564'' he worked on the design and development of the U-boat classes XXII, XVII A and XXVI. After the war he founded the ''Ingenieurkontor Lübeck'' (IKL) which among others designed the type 201, 202, 205 and 209 submarines. In 1963 he was appointed honorary professor at the University of Hamburg for shipbuilding. Type 205 Submarine
The Type 205 was a class of Germany, German diesel-electric submarines. They were single-hull (watercraft), hull vessels optimized for the use in the shallow Baltic Sea. The Type 205 is a direct evolution of the Type 201 submarine, Type 201 class with lengthened hull, new machinery and sensors. The biggest difference though is that ST-52 steel is used for the pressure hull since the Type 201's non-magnetic steel proved to be problematic. Type 206 submarine, Type 206, the follow-on class, finally succeeded with non-magnetic steel hulls. The Type 205 was in service with the Royal Danish Navy until 2004, in which it was known as ''Narhvalen'' class. War Merit Cross
The War Merit Cross () was a state decoration of Nazi Germany during World War II. By the end of the conflict it was issued in four degrees and had an equivalent civil award. A " de-Nazified" version of the War Merit Cross was reissued in 1957 by the ''Bundeswehr'' for its veterans. History This award was created by Adolf Hitler in October 1939 as a successor to the non-combatant Iron Cross which was used in earlier wars (similar medal but with a different ribbon). The award would recognize bravery or service in the furtherance of the war effort that fell short of the award of the Iron Cross. U-boat War Badge
The U-boat War Badge () was a German war badge that was awarded to U-boat crew members during World War I and World War II. History The ''U-boat War Badge'' was originally instituted during the First World War on February 1, 1918. It was awarded to recognize U-boat crews who had completed three war patrols. The badge was worn on the lower left side of the uniform and was oval shaped resembling a wreath of laurel leaves. A submarine lay across the center and the German State Crown (Reichskrone) was inlaid at the top center of the wreath. On October 13, 1939, the ''U-boat War Badge'' was reinstituted. It was very similar to the original badge with the exception of the imperial crown being replaced with a German Eagle above a swastika, and a more modernized submarine now facing towards the left was used.
