Indigenous rainforest blockades in Borneo began during the late 1980s and 90s. Borneo’s forests contain a variety of ecosystems, including rainforests, peatlands, mangroves, heath forests, and palm trees. The Sarawak Region had been ruled by the White Rajahs of the Brooks for the previous 100 years. These forests supply ecosystem services to Indigenous communities in Southeast Asia. Due to anthropogenic land-use changes, particularly logging and dam building, the Borneo rainforests have been deforested and fragmented at a rapid rate. Indigenous people, non-human species and entire ecological landscapes have been impacted by these land-use changes. White Rajahs
The White Rajahs were a dynastic monarchy of the British Brooke family, who founded and ruled the Raj of Sarawak, located on the north west coast of the island of Borneo, from 1841 to 1946. The first ruler was Briton James Brooke. As a reward for helping the Sultanate of Brunei fight piracy and insurgency among the indigenous peoples, he was granted the province of Kuching, which was known as Sarawak Asal (Original Sarawak) in 1841 and received independent kingdom status. Kelabit Highlands
The Kelabit Highlands are a mountain range located in the northernmost part of Sarawak, Malaysia in the Miri Division. It hosts the Bario village. The highest mountains in this range are Mount Murud at , Bukit Batu Buli at , and Bukit Batu Lawi at . The current population of the Kelabit people is about 6,800. Deforestation or forest clearance is the removal of a forest or stand of trees from land that is then land conversion, converted to non-forest use. Long Napir
Long Napir is a cluster of four settlements of Penan and Kelabit people in the Limbang division of Sarawak, Malaysia. It lies approximately east-north-east of the state capital Kuching. Geography Long Napir is located at the confluence of two rivers, Sungai Medihit and Sungai Limbang, about 90 miles from Limbang. The nearest town is Nanga Medamit; this can be reached in about four hours by 4WD vehicle on logging tracks, but the journey by river takes a day. Radio Free Sarawak ( ms, Radio Sarawak Bebas) is a pirate radio station established by environmental and anti-corruption activist Clare Rewcastle Brown and helmed by former Cats FM presenter Peter John Jaban (''Papa Orang Utan''), Christina Suntai who graduated from Florida Technical College in computer science and computer programming, and Michael Ngau. First broadcast on 16 November 2010, the station can be received by shortwave on 15420 kHz. It also produced podcasts for its programmes daily from 1100–1300 UTC or 7:00–9:00 pm at Sarawak local time (UTC+8). The station received wide publicity in Malaysia after the brief disappearance of Jaban. However it was later discovered that he had gone into hiding voluntarily. Clare Rewcastle Brown (born 20 June 1959) is a British environmental and anti-corruption activist, author, blogger and advocate journalist. The Pulong Tau National Park ( ms, Taman Negara Pulong Tau) is a national park in Kelabit Highlands in Limbang Division and Miri Division of Sarawak, Malaysia. Etymology In Lun Bawang and Kelabit dialects, ''Pulong Tau'' means "our forests", which signifies the pride of the indigenous people on their forests heritage. History The concept of a national park in this region was started as a community initiative in the 1970s. In 1984, Sarawak's National Parks & Wildlife Office submitted a formal proposal together with a petition letter from the local community to the Sarawak state government.
