Indianapolis Half Marathon
The 500 Festival Mini-Marathon (also known as the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon for sponsorship reasons) is an annual road half marathon usually held the first Saturday in May in Indianapolis, Indiana, United States. The race began in 1977 and became an official 500 Festival event in 1979. The course currently starts in downtown Indianapolis, then heads west toward Speedway. It features a lap around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, then returns to finish in the downtown area. From 1977 to 1992, the race was held the Friday before the Indianapolis 500. Starting in 1993, the race was moved to early May, the Saturday three weeks before the race, with rare exceptions. From 1994 to 2004, it was known as the Indianapolis Life 500 Festival Mini-Marathon. The race regularly attracts runners and spectators from all 50 states and several countries. It includes a men's and women's running division, as well as men's and women's wheelchair entries. Miki Gorman
Michiko "Miki" Suwa Gorman (August 9, 1935 – September 19, 2015) was an American marathon runner of Japanese ancestry. Gorman did not begin running competitively until she was in her mid-30s, but rapidly emerged as one of the elite marathoning women of the mid-1970s. She is the only woman to win both the Boston and New York City marathons twice and is the first of only two woman runners to win both marathons in the same year. William Henry Rodgers (born December 23, 1947) is an American runner, Olympian, and former record holder in the marathon. Rodgers is best known for his four victories in both the Boston Marathon, including three straight from 1978 to 1980, and 4 straight wins in the New York City Marathon, between 1976 and 1979. Futsum Zienasellassie ( Ge'ez: ፉፁም ዜናሥላሴ; born 16 December 1992 in Eritrea) is an Eritrean-born American long distance runner. After running for North Central High School in Indianapolis, Indiana, Zienasellassie ran for Northern Arizona University. He currently runs for the Hoka One One Northern Arizona Elite team. Early life Futsum Zienasellassie was born in Eritrea, and was at a refugee camp in Ethiopia before moving to the United States at the age of 14. Leonard Essau Korir (born December 10, 1986) is a Kenyan-born American long-distance runner who competes over distances from 5000 meters to the marathon. He was twice NCAA champion, winning an indoor 5000 m title and outdoor 10,000 meters title in 2011 for the Iona Gaels. Janet Cherobon-Bawcom (born August 22, 1978) is an American distance runner. She grew up in Kenya, before attending college in the United States. In college, she won three Division II national championships and was named an All-American eight times. She became eligible to compete for the United States in 2011.
