The Indiana Subdivision is a railroad line owned and operated by CSX Transportation in the U.S. states of Ohio and Indiana. The line runs from Cincinnati, Ohio, west to Washington, Indiana, along a former Baltimore and Ohio Railroad line. At its east end, the Indiana Subdivision becomes the Cincinnati Terminal Subdivision; it continues west as the Illinois Subdivision. Along the way, the line intersects the Hoosier Subdivision at Mitchell, Indiana. Washington is a city in Daviess County, Indiana, United States. The population was 12,017 at the time of the 2020 census. The city is the county seat of Daviess County. Baltimore And Ohio Railroad
The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was the oldest railroads in North America, oldest railroad in the United States and the first steam engine, steam-operated common carrier. Construction of the line began in 1828, and it operated as B&O from 1830 until 1987, when it was merged into the Chessie System. Its lines are today controlled by CSX Transportation. Founded to serve merchants from Baltimore who wanted to do business with settlers crossing the Appalachian Mountains, the railroad competed with several existing and proposed Central Avenue (Albany, New York), turnpikes and canals, including the Erie Canal, Erie and Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. The Cincinnati Terminal Subdivision is a railroad line owned by CSX Transportation in the U.S. states of Kentucky and Ohio. The line is part of the CSX Transportation Louisville Division and the Northern Region. There are seven sections to the Cincinnati Terminal Subdivision. The Illinois Subdivision is a railroad line owned and operated by CSX Transportation in the U.S. states of Indiana and Illinois. The line runs from Washington, Indiana, west to East St. Louis, Illinois, along a former Baltimore and Ohio Railroad line. At its east end, the Illinois Subdivision becomes the Indiana Subdivision. At its west end in East St. Louis, near the west end of the St. Louis Line Subdivision, it meets the Terminal Railroad Association of St. Louis. Hoosier Subdivision
The Hoosier Subdivision was a railroad line owned by CSX Transportation in the U.S. state of Indiana. The line ran from New Albany, Indiana, to Bedford, Indiana, for a total of 72.2 miles. At its south end it continued north from Norfolk Southern and at its north end it came to an end; it formerly connected here with the Soo Line (ex-Milwaukee Road) and former Canadian Pacific branch from Terre Haute, Indiana. The Indiana Rail Road operated on the Hoosier Subdivision from the Milwaukee Road junction in Bedford to Louisville from 2006 until 2009. The Hoosier Subdivision was considered out of service by CSX but was rail banked in case of future revival. Mitchell, Indiana
Mitchell is a city in Marion Township, Lawrence County, Indiana, United States. The population was 4,350 at the 2010 census. History Mitchell was built as a railroad town in the mid-19th century. At this location in Lawrence County, the Chicago, Indianapolis and Louisville Railroad, better known by the shorter name of "the Monon", was built as a north-south line from New Albany to Chicago, passing through the area which became Mitchell in 1853. In 1857, the east-west Ohio and Mississippi Railway (later part of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad) was completed, as part of a link between Cincinnati and St. Louis. The Ohio and Mississippi Railway (earlier the Ohio and Mississippi Rail Road), abbreviated O&M, was a railroad operating between Cincinnati, Ohio, and East St. Louis, Illinois, from 1857 to 1893. The railroad started in 1854 and paralleled the Cincinnati and Whitewater Canal. Its East St. Louis terminal near the Mississippi River was completed in 1857.
