Indian Mathematical Society
The Indian Mathematical Society (IMS) is the oldest organization in India devoted to the promotion of study and research in mathematics. The Society was founded in April 1907 by V. Ramaswamy Aiyer with its headquarters at Pune. The Society started its activities under the tentatively proposed name ''Analytic Club'' and the name was soon changed to ''Indian Mathematical Club''. After the adoption of a new constitution in 1910, the society acquired its present name, the Indian Mathematical Society. The first president of the Society was B. Hanumantha Rao. Publications The Society publishes two periodicals both of which are quarterly: *The ''Journal of the Indian Mathematical Society'' (''JIMS'': ISSN 0019-5839) *''The Mathematics Student'' (''Math Student'': ) The 1911 volume of the ''Journal'' contains one of the earliest contributions of the Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur or IIT-KGP) is a public institute of technology, research university, and autonomous institute established by the Government of India in Kharagpur, West Bengal. Founded in 1951, the institute is the first of the IITs to be established and is recognised as an Institute of National Importance. Anadi Sankar Gupta
Anadi Sankar Gupta (1 November 1932, Barisal – 14 June 2012, Kolkata) was an Indian mathematician. Till his death, he was an INSA Senior Scientist and emeritus faculty with the Department of Mathematics, IIT Kharagpur. He was awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for mathematical sciences in 1972 by the Government of India for his "significant contributions in the field of fluid dynamics and magnetohydrodynamics, notably on heat transfer in free convection flow in the presence of magnetic field," amongst other things. Life Anadi Sankar Gupta was born to Pramode Chandra and Usharani Gupta in Goila of Barisal District in the then British India (present Bangladesh). Ratan Shankar Mishra
Ratan Shankar Mishra (1918–1999) was an Indian mathematician and academic who was known for his solutions to the Unified fluid theory of Albert Einstein. He headed the department of Mathematics of the University of Gorakhpur (1958) and University of Allahabad (1963-1968) and served as the vice chancellor of Lucknow University (1982-1985), as the reader at University of Delhi (1954-1958) and as the dean at Banares Hindu University, Varanasi (1965-1968). He was honoured by the Government of India in 1971 with Padma Shri, the fourth highest Indian civilian award. Vishnu Vasudev Narlikar
Vishnu Vasudev Narlikar (26 September 1908 – 1 April 1991) was an Indian physicist specializing in general relativity. He is considered "the doyen of General Relativity in India." The Centre for Theoretical Physics, Jamia Millia Islamia has instituted the annual "''V. V. Narikar Memorial Lecture''" in memory of him. Friedrich Wilhelm Levi
Friedrich Wilhelm Daniel Levi (February 6, 1888 – January 1, 1966) was a German mathematician known for his work in abstract algebra, especially torsion-free abelian groups. He also worked in geometry, topology, set theory, and analysis. Early life and education Levi was born to Georg Levi and Emma Blum in Mulhouse in Alsace-Lorraine, then part of the German Empire. He received his Ph.D. in 1911 under Heinrich Martin Weber at the University of Strasbourg. Career Levi served his mandatory military service in the German Army in 1906–1907, and was called up again serving in the artillery during World War I, 1914–18. Awarded the Iron Cross, he was discharged as a lieutenant. In 1917, he married Barbara Fitting, with whom he eventually had three children ( Paul Levi, Charlotte, and Suzanne). He is currently professor of biological sciences, professor at the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering and director of the Bindley Bioscience Center at Purdue University. Hoon Balakram
Hoon Balakram (1876–1929) was an Indian mathematician, civil servant and Bombay High Court judge. Biography Balakram was born in Jalandhar, Punjab in 1876. He received his master's degree from Panjab University and later passed the Mathematical Tripos from the St John's College, Cambridge. In 1899 he passed the Indian Civil Service examination.
