Indian Creek is an unincorporated community in northeastern Monroe County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. The community is located on the banks of Indian Creek and along U.S. Route 24 U.S. Route 24 or U.S. Highway 24 (US 24) is one of the original United States Numbered Highways of 1926 which runs east and west for most of its routing. It originally ran from Pontiac, Michigan, in the east to Kansas City, Misso ... about midway between Monroe City to the northeast and Stoutsville to the southwest. Another name for the community of Indian Creek is "Swinkey". This name comes from one of the original settlers and the name has stuck to this day. History A post office called Indian Creek was established in 1839, and remained in operation until 1906. The community took its name from nearby Indian Creek. Monroe County, Missouri
Monroe County is a county in northeast Missouri. As of the 2020 census, the population was 8,666. Its county seat is Paris. It is the birthplace of Mark Twain. History The county was organized January 6, 1831 and named for James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States. Monroe County was one of several along the Missouri River settled by migrants from the Upper South, especially Kentucky and Tennessee. They brought slaves and slaveholding traditions with them and quickly started cultivating crops similar to those in Middle Tennessee and Kentucky: hemp and tobacco. Monroe City is a city in Marion County, Missouri, Marion, Monroe County, Missouri, Monroe, and Ralls County, Missouri, Ralls counties in the U.S. state of Missouri. Stoutsville, Missouri
Stoutsville is a village in Monroe County, Missouri, United States. The population was 37 at the 2020 census. History Stoutsville was platted in 1871 and named after the family of Robert P. Stout, the original owners of the town site. A post office called Stoutsville has been in operation since 1872. For at least 25 years during its early history, Stoutsville had been a sundown town, a place that forbade Black people to stay overnight. A sign once displayed near the railroad station read, "Mr. Nigger, don't let the sun set on you in Stoutsville." Geography Stoutsville is in northeast Monroe County, adjacent to the Buck Creek confluence with Mark Twain Lake and just south of U.S. Route 24.
