''In the Shadow of the Cypress'' () is a 2023 Iran, Iranian animated short film directed by Hossein Molayemi and Shirin Sohani, produced by Institute for the Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults and Barfak Animation Studio. The 20-minute film about Post-traumatic stress disorder, PTSD premiered in the Orizzonti section of the 80th Venice International Film Festival in 2023. It won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film at the 97th Academy Awards. Plot In this minimalistic, dialog-free tale, a former captain, suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, lives with his daughter in an isolated seaside house. Hossein Molayemi
Hossein Molayemi (born 1982, Shiraz) is an Iranian animation director and designer. Life Molayemi graduated in painting from the Boys' Fine Arts High School of Karaj in 2000, earned a Bachelor's in Graphics from Soore University in 2006, and a Master's in Animation from the University of Art, Tehran, in 2010. In 2025, the short animated film "In the Shadow of the Cypress", which he co-directed with his wife, won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film at the 97th Academy Awards. This achievement marked Iran's first-ever Oscar in animation history.
