''Immortal Wife'' is a best-selling fictional biography written by Irving Stone. The book came out in 1944 and is the story of Jessie Benton Frémont the well known and influential abolitionist and political activist. Her husband was Colonel John C. Frémont. The book is a novel and not a factual biography, nor a factual history. It is a novelization of the woman and her actual relationships. It is told as a narration by Jessie. Irving Stone (born Tennenbaum, July 14, 1903 – August 26, 1989) was an American writer, chiefly known for his biographical novels of noted artists, politicians, and intellectuals. Among the best known are '' Lust for Life'' (1934), about the life of Vincent van Gogh, and '' The Agony and the Ecstasy'' (1961), about Michelangelo. Biography Born Irving Tennenbaum in San Francisco, he was seven when his parents divorced. By the time he was a senior in high school, his mother had remarried. He legally changed his last name to "Stone", his stepfather's surname. Stone said his mother instilled a passion for reading in him. Jessie Ann Benton Frémont (May 31, 1824 – December 27, 1902) was an American writer and political activist. She was the daughter of Missouri Senator Thomas Hart Benton and the wife of military officer, explorer, and politician John C. Frémont. She wrote many stories that were printed in popular magazines of the time as well as several books of historical value. Her writings, which helped support her family during times of financial difficulty, were memoirs of her time in the American West. A strong supporter of her husband, who was one of the first two senators of the new U.S. state of California and a governor of the Territory of Arizona, she was outspoken on political issues and a determined opponent of slavery, which was excluded in the formation of California.
