Illerstadion
The Illerstadion is a 9,000 capacity multi-use stadium in Kempten, Germany. The stadium is located on the Illerdamm 10 road, on the east side of the River Iller in the northern area of the town. The stadium hosts the football team FC Kempten and the American football team the Allgäu Comets and also has facilities for athletics. History The first plans for a stadium next to the river were submitted by Otto Merkt in 1919. However, it was not until 1938 that the city council received plans from the planning officer Maximilian Vicari that construction began. The plans included 5,600 standing room, a small-caliber shooting range, facilities for high jump, shot put, pole vault and parking for 200 cars. Kempten
Kempten (; ) is the largest town of Allgäu, in Swabia, Bavaria, Germany. The population was about 68,000 in 2016. The area was possibly settled originally by Celts, but was later taken over by the Romans, who called the town ''Cambodunum''. Kempten is the oldest urban settlement (town) in Germany. History Pre-Roman The Greek geographer Strabo mentions in 50 BC a town of the Celtic Estiones named ''Kambodunon''. This is considered the oldest written reference of any German city. FC Kempten is German association football club based in Kempten, Bavaria. History The team was established in 1903 as the football department of gymnastics club ''Männerturnvereins Kempten''. In 1907 the parent association merged with two other local gymnastics clubs to form ''Turnverein 1856 Kempten'' and on 21 September 1908 the footballers went their own way as an independent side known as ''Fußball Club Kempten''. The footballers briefly re-joined ''TV'' in 1923, but resumed their independence two years later. Following World War II ''FC Kempten'' played in the Amateurliga Bayern-Süd (III) between 1957 and 1963 where they earned mid-table results. As a result of league restructuring in 1963 they slipped to fourth-tier play in the Landesliga Bayern-Süd. The 1968 Speedway World Pairs Championship was the unofficial FIM Speedway World Pairs Championship. The final took place at the Illerstadion in Kempten, West Germany. The championship was won by Sweden (24 points) who beat Great Britain (21 points) and Norway (16 points). The Allgäu Comets are an American football team from Kempten, Germany. The club is named after the Allgäu region of Bavaria, of which Kempten is the largest town. The club was originally formed as the Kempten Comets and renamed Allgäu Comets in 1993. It has played in Germany's highest football league, the American Football Bundesliga, now the German Football League, from 1985 to 1994. Iller
The Iller (; ancient name Ilargus) is a river of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg in Germany. It is a right tributary of the Danube, long. It is formed at the confluence of the rivers Breitach, Stillach and Trettach near Oberstdorf in the Allgäu region of the Alps, close to the Austrian border. Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four clockwise, anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit.
