Iliamna, Alaska
Iliamna ( Dena'ina: ) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Lake and Peninsula Borough, Alaska, United States. The population was 108 at the 2020 census, slightly down from 109 in 2010. History Iliamna was originally the name of an Athabaskan village at the point where the Iliamna River flows into Iliamna Lake, about east of present-day Iliamna. That site is now called Old Iliamna ( Dena'ina: ''Nuch'ak'dalitnu’''). In 1935, the residents of Old Iliamna moved to the present-day location. The first sport fishing lodge in Iliamna was built in the 1930s, and the second was built in the 1950s. Many more were built later in the 20th century. Iliamna's economy has two main elements: subsistence fishing and hunting and sport fishing lodges. Year-round residents largely pursue subsistence activities, while summer workers from other areas work in the lodges. Iliamna Bay
Iliamna Bay is a bay along the southeastern coast of the Alaska Peninsula. It is below the Chigmit Mountains. Old Iliamna is miles away and the Iliamna River are north of it. Cottonwood Bay borders it to the west and Cook Inlet to the south. Augustine Volcano, an island, is south of it. Despite its name it is not located on Iliamna Lake or the Iliamna River; but it is the closest point on the Gulf of Alaska to the lake. A road connects the bay at Williamsport, Alaska, to Iliamna Lake. Iliamna Lake or Lake Iliamna (Yup'ik: ''Nanvarpak''; Dena'ina Athabascan: ''Nila Vena'') is a lake in southwest Alaska, at the north end of the Alaska Peninsula, between Kvichak Bay and Cook Inlet, about west of Seldovia, Alaska. It shares a name with the Iliamna River, which flows into it, and the nearby community of Iliamna, Alaska. It is the largest lake in Alaska, 3rd largest lake entirely in the United States, and twenty-fourth in North America. Covering about , Iliamna Lake is long and up to wide, with a maximum depth of . The Iliamna River is a river in Alaska that flows into Iliamna Lake. Old Iliamna was located near the confluence. Guth's Lodge is located along the river. The Chigmit Mountains are to the northeast. The river is by Lonesome Point, Old Iliamna and Pile Bay Village. While no road connects the local communities to Alaska's road and highway system, a road connecting Williamsport, Alaska on Iliamna Bay along the Alaskan coast to Pike's Bay on Lake Iliamna provides an important transit route for boaters. The 15-mile road enables a shortcut for fishing vessels crossing from Cook Inlet and landing in Williamsport. Iliamna Volcano, or Mount Iliamna ( Dena'ina: ''Ch’naqał’in''; Sugpiaq: ''Puyulek''), is a glacier-covered stratovolcano in the largely volcanic Aleutian Range in southwest Alaska. Iliamna Airport is a state-owned public-use airport located three nautical miles (5.5 km) west of the central business district of Iliamna, in the Lake and Peninsula Borough of the U.S. state of Alaska. Facilities Iliamna Airport has two asphalt paved runways: 7/25 is 5,087 by 100 feet (1,551 x 30 m) and 17/35 is 4,800 by 100 feet (1,463 x 30 m). It also has two seaplane landing areas: Runway E/W measures 2,998 x 400 ft. (914 x 122 m) and Runway N/S measures 2,892 x 400 ft. (881 x 122 m). For the 12-month period ending December 31, 2004, the airport had 15,400 aircraft operations, an average of 42 per day: 73% general aviation and 27% air taxi. ''Iliamna'' is a small genus of flowering plants in the Malvaceae, mallow family (biology), family, endemic to North America. It is related to the bush mallows of California (''Malacothamnus'') and to ''Phymosia'' of Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. These perennial herbs are known commonly as wild hollyhocks and sometimes as globe mallows, Kankakee mallow, Kankakee globe mallow, and Streambank wild hollyhock. More often, the latter terms refer to members of the genus ''Sphaeralcea'', which belong, like Iliamna, to the "typical" mallow tribe (biology), tribe (Malveae) of the mallow and hibiscus subfamily Malvoideae. The name of the genus, proposed by Edward Lee Greene, appears to be a reference to Iliamna Lake in Alaska, even though the genus Iliamna does not occur in Alaska The plants are herbaceous with a racemose inflorescence consisting of showy, slightly fragrant flowers ranging in color from almost white to lavender.
