	Ilium (bone) The ilium () (: ilia) is the uppermost and largest region of the coxal bone, and appears in most vertebrates including mammals and birds, but not bony fish. All reptiles have an ilium except snakes, with the exception of some snake species which have a tiny bone considered to be an ilium. 	Iliac Fossa The iliac fossa is a large, smooth, concave surface on the internal surface of the Ilium (bone), ilium (part of the three fused bones making the hip bone). Structure The iliac fossa is bounded above by the iliac crest, and below by the Arcuate line (ilium), arcuate line. It is bordered in front and behind by the anterior and posterior borders of the Ilium (bone), ilium. The iliac fossa gives origin to the iliacus muscle. The obturator nerve passes around the iliac fossa. It is perforated at its inner part by a nutrient canal. 	Iliac Fascia The iliac fascia (or Abernethy's fascia) is the fascia overlying the iliacus muscle. Superiorly and laterally, the iliac fascia is attached to the inner aspect of the iliac crest; inferiorly and laterally, it extends into the thigh to unite with the femoral sheath; medially, it attaches to the periosteum of the ilium and iliopubic eminence near the linea terminalis, and blends with the psoas fascia and - over the quadratus lumborum muscle - with the anterior layer of thoracolumbar fascia. The iliac fascia overlies the femoral nerve, and lateral femoral cutaneous nerve. Structure It has the following connections: * ''laterally'', to the whole length of the inner lip of the iliac crest. * ''medially'', to the linea terminalis of the lesser pelvis, where it is continuous with the periosteum.
