Ihar Rynkevich
Ihar Mikhaylavich Rynkevich ( be, І́гар Міха́йлавіч Рынке́віч; born 3 April 1968) is a prominent Belarusian legal and political expert, journalist and human rights champion. Rynkevich is a member and the press secretary of the Belarus Helsinki Commission since 1996 and Vice Chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Popular Accord. Important Cases Rynkevich is best known for his role as lead defence counsel for Alaksandar Kazulin, former Chairman of BSDP and one of the most prominent Eastern-European human rights activist, and for advocating the release of American lawyer Emanuel Zeltser and his assistant Vladlena Funk during the U.S. - Belarus hostage crisis in 2008-2009. Social Democratic Party Of Popular Accord
The Social Democratic Party of Popular Accord ( be, Сацыял-дэмакратычная партыя Народнай Згоды) is a political party in Belarus. It was created in 1997, and is led by Siarhiej Jermak. It supports the government of president Alexander Lukashenko. The Social Democratic Party of Popular Accord considers itself the successor of the People's Accord Party (PAP). The party has stated its commitment to a social market economy according to the formula: "the market - as far as possible, government regulation - as far as necessary." Such a model aims to cut off the most negative features of a market economy. The party's only seat won in a Belarusian legislative election was in 2000. In the 2018 elections to local councils of deputies, 11 representatives were elected from the party. Alaksandar Kazulin
Alyaksandr Kazulin ( be, Аляксандр Уладзіслававіч Казулін, russian: Александр Владиславович Козулин, born 25 November 1955 in Minsk) is the former leader of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party and one of the candidates who ran for the office of President of Belarus on 19 March 2006. He was a rector of the Belarusian State University (BSU) from 1996 to 2003 and a government minister serving under Belarus President Lukashenko but later fell out of favor. He holds a PhD in mathematics and pedagogy. Several weeks before the election, on 2 March 2006, Kazulin was beaten and detained by police after attempting to enter the All Belarusian People's Assembly. He was charged with disorderly conduct and released after being held in custody for eight hours. Charter 97 ( be, Хартыя'97; russian: Хартия'97) is a declaration calling for democracy in Belarus and a pro- human rights news site taking its inspiration from the declaration. The document – the title of which deliberately echoes the Czechoslovak human rights declaration Charter 77 20 years earlier – was created on the anniversary of a referendum held in 1996, and which, in the words of the organization of the same name, declares: "devotion to the principles of independence, freedom and democracy, respect to the human rights, solidarity with everybody, who stands for elimination of dictatorial regime and restoration of democracy in Belarus". Vladlena Funk ( rus, Владлена Функ; born 1977) is a former Russian-American freelance reporter, who was held captive by the Belarusian KGB for over a year in a high-profile US-Belarus hostage crisis, together with American lawyer Emanuel Zeltser, who was head of the American Russian Law Institute, a non-for-profit non-governmental public policy research and advisory organization.
