Ignazio Florio Sr. (Palermo, 16 December 1838 – Palermo, 17 May 1891) was an Italian entrepreneur and politician, member of the rich Florio economic dynasty, one of the wealthiest Italian families during the late 19th century. Biography The son of Vincenzo Florio Sr., the founder of the entrepreneurial Florio family dynasty, and of Giulia Portalupi, Ignazio was born in Palermo on 17 December 1838. The Monument to Ignazio Florio is a bronze monumental sculpture, dedicated to the Sicilian industrialist, erected in 1909 on Piazza Florio, in Palermo, Sicily. History The bronze statue of Ignazio Florio Senior (1838 - 1891) was commissioned by a committee of workers. The design was by the architect G. Damiani Almeyda, and the bronze statue sculpted by Benedetto Civiletti and stands on a marble plinth. At the unveiling, three hundred workers from the Florio factory in Marseille were present. A similar monument had been built in 1896 in Favignana by sculptor Francesco Cocchiara. The Senate of the Republic ( it, Senato della Repubblica), or simply the Senate ( it, Senato), is the upper house of the bicameral Italian Parliament (the other being the Chamber of Deputies). The two houses together form a perfect bicameral system, meaning they perform identical functions, but do so separately. Pursuant to the Articles 57, 58, and 59 of the Italian Constitution, the Senate has 200 elective members, of which 196 are elected from Italian constituencies, and 4 from Italian citizens living abroad. Furthermore, there is a small number (currently 6) of senators for life (''senatori a vita''), either appointed or ''ex officio''.
