Igandu
Igandu is a village in central Tanzania. It is in the Ward of the same name which is part of Chamwino District Transport Igandu has a station on the Central Railway of Tanzanian Railways. It is near the site of the disastrous Igandu train disaster. A new station on the new Standard Gauge Railway is nearing completion in early 2023. Igandu Train Disaster
The Igandu train disaster occurred during the early morning of June 24, 2002, in Tanzania. It is one of the worst rail accidents in African history. A passenger train with over 1,200 people on board rolled backwards down a hill into a slow moving goods train, killing 281. The cause was brake failure, with unproven claims of sabotage. Overview The train had travelled from Dar es Salaam to the state of Dodoma in Central Tanzania, had passed Msagali, and was nearing the city of Dodoma when it began climbing the tracks at a hill called Igandu. It is believed that there was a fault with the train's brakes as it climbed the hill. The driver stopped the train near the summit of the hill, inspected and adjusted the braking system, and climbed back into the cab. When the train began moving again the brakes failed totally, causing the train to immediately begin rolling backward. Chamwino District
Chamwino District is one of the seven districts of the Dodoma Region of Tanzania. It is bordered to the north by Chemba District, to the east by Manyara Region, Kongwa District and Mpwapwa District, to the south by Iringa Region, and to the west by Singida Region, Bahi District and Dodoma District. Its administrative seat is the town of Chamwino. According to the 2012 Tanzania National Census, the population of Chamwino District was 330,543. By 2022, the population of the district had grown to 486,176. Transport Paved trunk road T3 from Morogoro to Dodoma and paved trunk road T5 from Dodoma to Iringa pass through the district. Central Line (Tanzania)
The Central Line (), formerly known as the Tanganyika Railway () is the most important railway line in Tanzania, apart from TAZARA. It runs west from Dar es Salaam to Kigoma on Lake Tanganyika via Dodoma. Extensions of the central route branch to the cities of Mwanza on Lake Victoria, Tanga, Singida and Mpanda. In 2017, Tanzania began the Tanzania Standard Gauge Railway project, which will construct a standard gauge (1435 mm) line parallel to the meter-gauge (1000 mm) Central Line between Dar es Salaam and Mwanza, with a new route branching northwest at Isaka to Kigali in Rwanda. The Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) is a state corporation, state-owned enterprise that runs one of Tanzania's two main railway networks. the Headquarters are located in Mchafukoge, Ilala District, Dar es Salaam, Ilala District, Dar es Salaam Region.
