''If Only I Could Hibernate'' () is 2023 drama film written and directed by Zoljargal Purevdash in her directorial debut. It was the first Mongolian film to play in the Official Selection of the Cannes Film Festival, where it competed in the ''Un Certain Regard'' section at the 2023 edition. The film was selected as the Mongolian entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 97th Academy Awards. Plot Ulzii (Battsooj Uurtsaikh) is a teenager living with his family in a yurt on the outskirts of Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia. His father is dead and his mother resorts to drinking alcohol instead of finding a job, meaning that there is often not enough coal to heat the home in the cold of winter. Zoljargal Purevdash
Zoljargal Purevdash (born 1990) is a Mongolian filmmaker. Early life Born in Ulaanbaatar, Purevdash excelled at maths and physics in her youth and earned a scholarship to a prestigious high school, where she joined the drama club. She won another scholarship to study filmmaking at the J. F. Oberlin University in Japan. Career Her first short film ''Over the City, Under the Sky'' (2010) won the Cinema Club Award from the West Tokyo City Film Festival. After graduating from film school in Japan, she returned to Mongolia and worked on films as a first assistant director. Later she directed two experimental short films called ''Burgundy'' (2013) and ''Outliers'' (2017), both of which screened at the Altan Khalis Independent Film Festival. This is a list of submissions for the 97th Academy Awards for the Best International Feature Film. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has invited the film industries of various countries to submit their best film for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film every year since the award was created in 1956. The award is presented annually by the academy to a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States that contains primarily non-English dialogue. The International Feature Film Award Committee oversees the process and reviews all the submitted films. The category was previously called the Best Foreign Language Film, but this was changed in April 2019 to Best International Feature Film, after the Academy deemed the word "Foreign" to be outdated.
