Idiota
Raymundus Jordanus (fl. c. 1381), best known by his Latin nom de plume Idiota ("the Idiot"), though this identification is disputed by some, was a medieval Catholic writer whose identity remained unknown for some centuries. Biography and identity The pseudonym "idiot" need not be understood in the ordinary sense as now used. According to the original Greek, ''idiota'' means private (also as a soldier), simple, or peculiar, and it is probable that the writer in question employed it in this sense to signify that he was a person of no consequence. Théophile Raynaud discovered that Raymundus Jordanus was the author of the works found in the library of the Church Fathers under the name Idiota. In his preface to one of the works of Idiota, the , which he published in 1641, he accounts for this discovery by the testimony of idiotic writers, and by the fact that some of the original manuscripts had been signed by Raymundus. Idiot (usage)
An idiot, in modern use, is a stupid or foolish person. 'Idiot' was formerly a technical term in legal and psychiatric contexts for some kinds of profound intellectual disability where the mental age is two years or less, and the person cannot guard themself against common physical dangers. The term was gradually replaced by 'profound mental retardation', which has since been Euphemism#Lifespan, replaced by other terms. Along with terms like Moron (psychology), moron, Intellectual disability#Terminology, imbecile, Retard (pejorative), retard and cretinism, cretin, its use to describe people with mental disabilities is considered archaic and offensive. Moral idiocy refers to a moral disability. Théophile Raynaud
Théophile Raynaud (15 November 1583 – 31 October 1663) was a French Jesuit theologian and writer. Biography Théophile Raynaud was born November 15, 1583, at Sospel, near Nice. He studied at Avignon, and became quite accomplished as a student of philosophy. In 1602 he entered the Society of Jesus, and was made one of their teachers at Lyon. At first he taught elementary branches, but soon found advancement, and was finally given a professorship of philosophy and theology. In 1631 he was chosen confessor to prince Maurice of Savoy, and repaired to Paris. Here he was made uncomfortable by unpleasant relations to Richelieu, who, having been attacked by a Spanish theologian for the alliance of the French government with the German Protestants, had asked Raynaud for a reply and been refused.
