Ichabod
Ichabod ( ''ʾĪḵāḇōḏ'', "without glory", or "where is the glory?") is mentioned in the first Book of Samuel as the son of Phinehas, a priest at the biblical shrine of Shiloh, who was born on the day that the Israelites' Ark of God was taken into Philistine captivity. His mother went into labour due to the shock of hearing that her husband and Eli, her father-in-law, had died and that the Ark had been captured. He is also named later as the brother of Ahitub. Etymology The First Book of Samuel () tells how Ichabod's mother named him because ''the glory has departed from Israel'', because of the loss of the Ark to the Philistines, and perhaps also because of the deaths of Eli and Phinehas. She repeats the phrase "The glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured", to show her piety, and to express that the public and spiritual loss lay heavier upon her spirit than her personal or domestic calamity. Phinehas, Son Of Eli
Hophni () and Phinehas or Phineas () were the two sons of Eli. The first book of Samuel describes them as the officiating priests at the sanctuary of Shiloh at the time of Hannah. According to Josephus, Phinehas officiated as high priest because Eli had resigned as high priest at Shiloh because of his advanced age. In the biblical narrative, Hophni and Phinehas are criticised for engaging in illicit behaviour, such as appropriating the best portion of sacrifices for themselves, and having sexual relations with the sanctuary's serving women. They are described as "sons of Belial" in () KJV, "corrupt" in the New King James Version, or "scoundrels" in the NIV. Wife Of Phinehas
The wife of Phinehas is an unnamed character in the Hebrew Bible. Her story covers just a few verses at the end of 1 Samuel 4, where she is introduced as the daughter-in-law of Eli and the wife of Phinehas. She is about to give birth when she hears that the Ark of God had been captured by the Philistines. She dies in childbirth, and calls her son "Ichabod", saying, "The glory has departed from Israel." Susan Pigott notes that it is this woman (rather than Eli or Samuel), who "voices the dismay all Israel feels" when the ark is captured. Philistine Captivity Of The Ark
The Philistine captivity of the Ark was an episode described in the biblical history of the Israelites, in which the Ark of the Covenant was in the possession of the Philistines, who had captured it after defeating the Israelites in a battle at a location between Eben-ezer, where the Israelites encamped, and Aphek (probably Antipatris), where the Philistines encamped. The ark narrative does not include any mention of Samuel; Bill T. Arnold suggests that it is "in order to celebrate the power of Yahweh's ark." Eli (biblical Figure)
Eli (, ; ; , 11th century BC) was, according to the Book of Samuel, a priest and a Biblical judges, judge of the Israelites in the city of Shiloh (biblical city), Shiloh, History of ancient Israel and Judah, ancient Israel. Ahitub (High Priest)
Ahitub ( ''ʾĂḥīṭūḇ'', "my brother is goodness" or "brother of goodness") was a High Priest of Israel cited in the Bible. He was the son of Phinehas, grandson of Eli, and brother of Ichabod.
