Icelandic European Union Membership Referendum
A referendum on the resumption of European Union membership negotiations has been proposed to be held in Iceland. The referendum was suggested after the Independence Party (Iceland), Independence Party and the Progressive Party (Iceland), Progressive Party formed a coalition government following the 2013 Icelandic parliamentary election, April 2013 parliamentary elections.Icelanders to get a referendum on joining the EU BBC News, 22 May 2013 The previous Social Democratic Alliance-led government had suspended opening of new chapters within the Accession of Iceland to the European Union, accession negotiations prior to the election (the opened chapters are still negotiated about), and the incoming government vowed not to resume them unless they were first given a mandate to do so by a referendum.

''The Reykjavík Grapevine'' is an English language, English-language Icelandic magazine and online newspaper based in the Icelandic capital city, capital of Reykjavík. Its target audience primarily consists of foreigners, immigrants, international students, young Icelanders, and tourists. The magazine is currently a year-round publication, fortnightly from May to October and monthly from November to April. The magazine debuted on June 13, 2003. The People's Party () is an Icelandic political party, with an emphasis on disability rights, pensioners' interests, and direct democracy. It currently sits in government. 2024 Icelandic Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Iceland on 30 November 2024 to elect the 63 members of the Althing. The centre-left Social Democratic Alliance, led by Kristrún Frostadóttir, outperformed the ruling Independence Party to win the most seats, at 15. The election saw the worst performance by the Independence Party, Progressive Party, the Left-Green Movement, and the Pirate Party in each of the parties' histories, while Viðreisn, the People's Party, and the Centre Party saw their best performance in each of the parties' histories. This follows a trend of Icelanders voting against every post– 2008 recession government except during the 2021 election. Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir
Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir (born 4October 1965) is an Icelandic politician, who has been chairwoman of Viðreisn since 2017. Þorgerður was deputy chairwoman of the Independence Party from 2005 to 2010. She was the Minister of Education, Science and Culture from 31 December 2003 to 1 February 2009. From 2006, Þorgerður served as acting Prime Minister in the absence of Geir Haarde, including during his 2009 cancer treatment. She left the Independence Party in 2016 and joined the newly founded Viðreisn and became its chairman the following year. She was Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture in 2017. Education Þorgerður Katrín took stúdentspróf from Menntaskólanum við Sund in Reykjavík 1985. Logi Már Einarsson (born 21 August 1964) is an Icelandic politician and architect. Early life and education Logi grew up in Akureyri and took stúdentspróf from Menntaskólinn á Akureyri in 1985. He studied architecture at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design 1986– 92 and graduated as a civil architect (Master of Architecture). Professional life Following graduation Logi returned to Akureyri, where he worked as a landscape designer at H.J. teiknistofa 1992–94 and for the technical and zoning office at Akureyri municipality 1994–96, before switching back to the private sector where he worked for Form 1996-1997, Úti og Inni 1997–2003 and Arkitektúr.is 2003–2004. Althing
The (; ), anglicised as Althingi or Althing, is the Parliamentary sovereignty, supreme Parliament, national parliament of Iceland. It is the oldest surviving parliament in the world. The Althing was founded in 930 at ('Thing (assembly), thing fields' or 'assembly fields'), about east of what later became the country's capital, Reykjavík.
