The Icelandic men's national handball team represents Iceland in international men's handball. It is controlled by the Icelandic Handball Association. The Icelandic Handball Association ( or ''HSÍ'') is the national governing body for handball in Iceland. It is based in Reykjavík. Club handball The federation organizes the national handball leagues for both men and women club teams and the Icelandic cup for men and women. International handball Iceland was the host of the 1995 World Men's Handball Championship. The men's team The men's team has appeared frequently in large tournaments in recent decades. Their best overall result is the silver medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Their best result in the world championship is 5th place in 1997. They have made it to the semi-finals of the European Men's Handball Championship twice, winning the bronze medal in 2010. Head coach for the men's national team is Guðmundur Guðmundsson. Team handball at the 1976 Summer Olympics featured competition for men and women. It was the first time women's handball was a part of the Olympics. 1954 World Men's Handball Championship
The 1954 World Men's Handball Championship was the second indoor handball world championship. It was held in Sweden from 13–17 January 1954, and the hosts also won the championship. It was the first world championship governed by the International Handball Federation, after the first one was governed by the International Amateur Handball Federation (IAHF). 1938 World Men's Handball Championship
The 1938 World Men's Handball Championship was the first ever handball World Championship. It was played in Germany on 5 and 6 February 1938. Contested by just 4 national teams, the tournament was won by hosts Germany. History Only two years before at the fourth International Amateur Handball Federation, IAHF congress the first international rules for indoor handball were created. The only game between indoor handball national teams had been played between the Danish and Swedish teams in Copenhagen on 8 March 1935. Sweden had won 18 to 12. In Germany and Austria indoor handball was not regularly played and they had no international appearance yet. An unofficial German national team like team played at tournament in Copenhagen on 28 August 1934. Venues All games were played in the Deutschlandhalle in Berlin. Handball At The 2024 Summer Olympics
The handball tournaments at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France were held from 25 July to 11 August 2024. Preliminary pool matches occurred at South Paris Arena 6, with the final phase staged at Pierre Mauroy Stadium in Lille. The format remained the same since 2000 for the men and 2008 for the women, as twelve teams in two groups battle each other in the round robin, followed by the knockout matches for the top eight starting with the quarterfinals and ending with the final and bronze match. Denmark won the men's tournament in a clean sweep with Germany on second place. Host France became 8th. Norway won by the women defeating France in the final. The final set a spectators record for a women's handball match with 26,664 spectators. Most valuable players were Katrine Lunde (NOR) for the women and Mathias Gidsel (DEN) for the men. Handball At The 2020 Summer Olympics
The handball tournaments at the 2020 Summer Olympics took place from 24 July to 8 August 2021 at Yoyogi National Gymnasium in Tokyo. It was originally scheduled to be held in 2020, but on 24 March 2020, the Olympics were postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic meant that there were no spectators. The format was the same as it has been since 2000 for the men and 2008 for the women: 12 teams in two groups playing round robin followed by knock-out matches for the eight best starting with quarter-finals and ending with final and bronze match. France took both gold medals as the first team since Yugoslavia in Los Angeles 1984. The handball tournaments at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro was held from 6 to 21 August at the Future Arena in the Barra Olympic Park. The men's handball tournament at the 2012 Olympic Games in London was held from 28 July to 12 August at the Olympic Park. The group stage matches were held at the Copper Box and the knockout rounds took place at the larger Basketball Arena. Twelve nations were represented in the tournament. The four best teams from each group advanced to a quarter-final round, while the 5th and 6th teams in each group were classified 9th–12th by the results of their group matches.
