Handball At The 1976 Summer Olympics
Team handball at the 1976 Summer Olympics featured competition for men and women. It was the first time women's handball was a part of the Olympics. Medal summary Participating nations Each qualified country was allowed to enter one team of 14 players and they all were eligible for participation. Five nations competed in both tournaments. Japan entered only a squad of twelve women and twelve men. Only four male reserve players did not participate (one from Denmark, two from Hungary, and one from Czechoslovakia). Team Handball
Handball (also known as team handball, European handball, Olympic handball or indoor handball) is a team sport in which two teams of seven players each (six outcourt players and a Handball goalkeeper, goalkeeper) pass a ball using their hands with the aim of throwing it into the goal of the opposing team. A standard match consists of two periods of 30 minutes, and the team that scores more goals wins. Modern handball is played on a court of , with a goal in the middle of each end. The goals are surrounded by a zone where only the defending goalkeeper is allowed; goals must be scored by throwing the ball from outside the zone or while "diving" into it. The sport is usually played indoors, but outdoor variants exist in the forms of field handball, Czech handball (which were more common in the past) and beach handball. Adrian Cosma (5 June 1950 – 1996) was a Romanian handball player who won the world title in 1974. He competed at the 1972, 1976 and 1980 Olympics and won one silver and two bronze medals. Werner Stöckl
Werner Stöckl (born 28 June 1952) is a retired Romanian handball player of Banat Swabian ethnicity. He won the world title in 1974 and two Olympic medals in 1972 and 1976. Stöckl took up handball in 1967 and in 1969 joined Steaua București, winning with them the EHF Champions League title in 1977. In 1981 he transferred to Carpați Mârșa and helped to promote them from the second to the first division. In 1987 he immigrated with his wife to West Germany, where he played one year for TuS Hofweier upon recommendation from fellow player Simon Schobel. After that he worked as a handball coach. Gheorghe "Ghiță" Licu (1 December 1945 – 8 April 2014) was a Romanian handball pivot player. Between 1966 and 1976 he capped 197 times for the national team and scored 328 goals, winning world titles in 1970 and 1974 and Olympic medals in 1972 and 1976. Domestically he played his entire career from 1964 to 1980 for Dinamo Bucuresti, winning the national titles in 1965, 1966 and 1978 and the Romanian Cup in 1979.
