Iain Sutherland (conductor)
Iain Sutherland (Glasgow, 1936) is a British conductor. In 1966 he was appointed Conductor of the BBC Scottish Radio Orchestra) in Glasgow. Previously he had been an orchestral and session violinist in London playing in the LPO, Philharmonia, RPO and ECO under such conductors as Boult, Sargent, Groves, Solti and Klemperer. Sutherland was the conductor of the BBC Scottish Radio Orchestra until a major restructuring was initiated by BBC in 1972 to reduce its coverage of "light" music, in favour of "pop" music. His remit with the BBC SRO included TV as well as Radio. He was Musical Director for many Light Entertainment series with Stanley Baxter, Kenneth McKellar, Moira Anderson and Andy Stewart The orchestra was officially closed in 1981. In 1973 Sutherland returned to London and was regularly invited by BBC Radio 2 as guest conductor of the BBC Concert Orchestra for the "Friday Night Is Music Night" programme. Iain Sutherland (diplomat)
Sir Iain Johnstone Sutherland (15 June 1925 – 1 July 1986) was a British diplomat and Ambassador to the Soviet Union between 1982 and 1985. Early career Iain Sutherland's parents were the Scottish artists David Macbeth Sutherland and Dorothy Johnstone. He was born in Edinburgh in 1925 and was educated at Fettes College, The University of Aberdeen and Balliol College, Oxford. Sutherland served with the Royal Artillery from 1944 to 1947, and entered the Diplomatic Service in 1950. Initially training in Russian, he was posted to Belgrade in 1956, became Head of Chancery in Havana, Cuba in 1959 and was posted to Washington in 1962 immediately after the Cuban Missile Crisis He was appointed Consul-general in Jakarta in 1967 and became head of the Foreign Office's South Asia department from 1969 to 1973 before being appointed as Minister in Moscow in 1974. Sutherland Brothers
The Sutherland Brothers (Gavin and Iain Sutherland) were a Scottish folk and soft rock duo. From 1973 to 1978, they performed with rock band Quiver, and recorded and toured as Sutherland Brothers & Quiver. Under this combined moniker, the group recorded several albums and had a significant international hit single with the song " Arms of Mary" in 1976. In North America, they are primarily known for their 1973 single " (I Don't Want to Love You But) You Got Me Anyway". Iain died of an illness on 25 November 2019, aged 71.
