Ian McLachlan
Ian Murray McLachlan (born 2 October 1936) is a former Australian politician who served as a member of the House of Representatives from 1990 to 1998, representing the Liberal Party. He was Minister for Defence in the Howard government from 1996 to 1998. Before entering politics, he served as president of the National Farmers Federation from 1984 to 1988. He played first-class cricket as a youth. Early life Born in North Adelaide, McLachlan was educated at St. Peter's College, Adelaide, where he first displayed his cricketing prowess, and Jesus College at the University of Cambridge. He played 72 matches of first-class cricket for Cambridge University and South Australia between 1956 and 1964, scoring 3743 runs at an average of 31.72, with 9 centuries while completing his bachelor and masters in Law. First-class Cricket
First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is of three or more days scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Matches must allow for the teams to play two innings each, although in practice a team might play only one innings or none at all. The etymology of "first-class cricket" is unknown, but the term was used loosely before it acquired official status in 1895, following a meeting of leading English clubs. At a meeting of the International Cricket Council, Imperial Cricket Conference (ICC) in 1947, it was formally defined on a global basis. Hamish Angus McLachlan (born 28 August 1975) is an Australian sports broadcaster with Seven Sport. Since joining Seven Sport in 2008, McLachlan has covered multiple events including the Australian Football League (AFL), the Australian Open, the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games. Gillon McLachlan (born 1973) is a former Australian sports administrator and now CEO of a major gambling company. He is the former chief executive officer of the Australian Football League (AFL). He was appointed to the role in 2014, succeeding Andrew Demetriou, having previously been his deputy, and finished his contract at the end of the 2023 season, passing the reins to Andrew Dillon. Angus McLachlan
Angus Alexander McLachlan (born 11 November 1944) is an Australian pastoralist and former first-class cricketer. Cricket career Like his elder brother Ian before him, McLachlan was educated at St. Peter's College, Adelaide, and Jesus College at the University of Cambridge. He made his first-class cricket debut for Cambridge University in his freshman year, 1964, taking 4 for 41 with "excellent leg-spin bowling" against Northamptonshire. Two games later he took 4 for 36 and 1 for 36 in an innings victory over Combined Services. He kept his place in the team for the rest of the season, playing in the annual match against Oxford University at Lord's. He finished the season with 18 wickets at 33.55. Although his bowling "did not come up to expectations" and was "often expensive" in 1965, McLachlan played most of Cambridge's matches and once again appeared against Oxford at Lord's. Cambridge University Cricket Club
Cambridge University Cricket Club, established in 1820, is the representative cricket club for students of the University of Cambridge. The club was recognised as holding first-class cricket, first-class status until 2020. The university played List A cricket in 1972 and 1974 only. It has not played top-level Twenty20 cricket. With some 1,200 members, home matches are played at Fenner's.
