The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (IRGCN; ; officially abbreviated in Persian as NEDSA and also known as the Sepah Navy) is the naval warfare service of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps founded in 1985, and one of the two maritime forces of Iran, parallel to the conventional Islamic Republic of Iran Navy. The IRGC has been designated as a terrorist organization by the governments of Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and the United States. IRGC's Navy has steadily improved its capabilities to support unconventional warfare and defend Iran's offshore facilities, coastlines, and islands in the Persian Gulf. Alireza Tangsiri
Commodore Alireza Tangsiri (; born 1962) is an Iranian naval officer who serves as the commander of the IRGC Navy, appointed in 2018. Military career Tangsiri was a naval brigade commander during the Iran-Iraq War. He later headed the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy (IRGCN) 1st Naval District in Bandar Abbas. In September 2007, Tangsiri said that if the United States were "to clash with us, we would chase them even to the Gulf of Mexico." In 2013 he said, “the Israelis are Jews and the Americans are Christians. Our Quran stresses that they are not our friends.” In January 2016, after Iran detained 10 US Marines in the 2016 U.S.–Iran naval incident when they had engine failure and entered Iranian waters, Tangsiri described it as "U.S. forces surrendering to Iran." MV ''Maersk Ganges'' is a Marshall Islands-registered container ship.
