IPDC-UNESCO Prize For Rural Communication
The IPDC-UNESCO Prize for Rural Communication is awarded by the UNESCO-sponsored International Programme for the Development of Communication. Its aim is to recognize initiatives for improving communication in rural communities, mainly in developing countries. The prize was established in 1985 by the Executive Board of UNESCO and consists of a sum of US$20,000. It is awarded to no more than two winners every two years. Winners The winner of the 1985 Prize was the Kheda Communication Project. The prize was won in 1999 by Radio Tanzania, and in 2003 by Radio Toco of Trinidad & Tobago. The International Programme for the Development of Communication is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) programme aimed at strengthening the development of mass media in developing countries. Background On December 10, 1948, Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted and proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly as Resolution 217 A (III). Developing Countries
A developing country is a sovereign state with a lesser developed Industrial sector, industrial base and a lower Human Development Index (HDI) relative to other countries. However, this definition is not universally agreed upon. There is also no clear agreement on which countries fit this category. The term low and middle-income country (LMIC) is often used interchangeably but refers only to the economy of the countries. The World Bank classifies the world's economies into four groups, based on gross national income per capita: high, upper-middle, lower-middle, and low income countries.
