On leaving school he was employed by his uncle, manager of estates for his relation, the Duke of Roxburghe. In 1836, Innes emigrated to Tasmania where he arrived in Hobart in 1837, joining the ''Hobart Town Courier''. A few years later he returned to Great Britain, and contributed to the press in London, and to the ''Penny Cyclopaedia''. Veronica May Volkersz ( Innes; 1917–2000) was a British aviator and beauty queen. She flew for the RAF's Air Transport Auxiliary in the Second World War and was the first British woman to fly an operational jet fighter when she ferried a Meteor from the Gloster factory to RAF Moreton Valence on 15 September 1945. Early life Veronica May Innes was born in Chesterton, Cambridge, on 17 April 1917. Her father was G. V. d'A. Innes – a professional soldier who rose to the rank of Major. When he served with the Royal Scots Fusiliers in India, she spent several summers in the Himalayan city of Srinigar, which she much preferred to her boarding school life in England. Lieutenant General James John McLeod Innes (5 February 1830 – 13 December 1907) was a Scottish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Born in British India to Scottish parents, Innes was educated privately, then at Edinburgh University and at Addiscombe Military Seminary, military academy of the East India Company where he was awarded the Pollock Medal. He was commissioned into the Bengal Engineers in 1848 and, after further training, he arrived in India in November 1850. When the Indian Mutiny began in May 1857 he was at Lucknow, where he helped to defend the city throughout its siege. Archibald Clunes Innes
Archibald Clunes Innes (1799–1857) was a soldier and pastoralist from Thrumster, Caithness, Scotland. When he arrived in Australia in 1822 he was a captain in the Third Regiment (Buffs), on the ship ''Eliza'', in charge of 170 convicts. Innes was a commandant at the Port Macquarie penal settlement from November 1826 to April 1827. He then spent time in Sydney as brigade major before becoming a superintendent of police and magistrate at Parramatta, until 1829. Captain Innes returned in 1830 and settled on his grant of 2,568 acres (1,039 ha) of land near Port Macquarie where the 22-room Lake Innes house was built, using convict labour, in several stages between 1831 and 1843. Thomas Innes Of Learney
Sir Thomas Innes of Learney (26 August 1893 – 16 October 1971) was a Scottish officer of arms who was Lord Lyon from 1945 to 1969. He was Carrick Pursuivant and Albany Herald in the 1920s and 1930s. He was a very active Lord Lyon, strongly promoting his views of what his office was through his writings and pronouncements in his Court. In 1950, he convinced the Scots Law Times to start publishing the decisions made in Lyon Court. By ruling on uncontested petitions, he was able to expound many of his theories in court but not under review of his superior court, and get them published in the judicial record. His treatise, ''Scots Heraldry'', was first published in 1934 when he was Carrick Pursuivant; then a second, enlarged edition came out in 1956, and it has practically eclipsed earlier works on the subject. Urquhart Edward "Ted" Innes (12 February 1925 – 28 May 2010) was an Australian politician. He was an Australian Labor Party member of the Australian House of Representatives from 1972 to 1983, representing the seat of Melbourne. Innes was born in Melbourne and was a long-serving state secretary of the Electrical Trades Union prior to entering parliament. He was involved in the state Labor Party at a senior level for many years, including treasurer of the state executive (1967–71), state senior vice-chairman (1971–73) and state chairman (1973–75), as well as a member of the party's national executive from 1969 to 1976. History Innes was born in Double Bay, Sydney to Emily Jane Innes, née Smith, and Joseph George Long Innes. John Innes (Toronto, Ontario Politician)
John Innes (died July 1951) was a municipal politician in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He was born in Scotland and immigrated to Canada in around 1900 when he was in his twenties. A carpenter by trade he built a home on Merton Street in North Toronto. He then became a developer, building several other homes around the area. He married Jesse Coutts, but she died in 1928 after being hit by a golf ball. He served eight years on Toronto city council before being elected to the Toronto Board of Control, Board of Control in 1947.
