ICT Hub
The ICT Hub was a project in the UK that aimed to support voluntary and community-based organisations in England with their technology needs. It was set up in 2005 and closed in 2008. The Hub worked to create sustainable environment whereby charities and community groups can benefit from the use of information and communications technology (ICT). Services Smaller organisations can benefit enormously from effective use of technology, whether this is by building a website to communicate with its beneficiaries, or creating a database to manage its members. However charitable organisations often do not have the funds or expertise to implement technological solutions successfully. The ICT Hub aimed to help charities overcome these barriers. Circuit Rider (technology)
The term circuit rider, which has its roots in Methodist preaching, has more recently been applied to technology assistance providers who travel to small non-profit organizations in a particular sector to troubleshoot or support particular technology needs in those organizations. Another term for these people is eRider. In this context, a circuit rider is part trainer, part management consultant, and part computer expert. They provide consulting and assistance with technology strategy development, make multiple visits to the organizations they serve, and provide advice and information by phone and e-mail. They can serve regional constituencies by travel from a central location. Additionally, circuit riders can "cross-pollinate" the groups they service, transmitting insights, tools, and tips as they travel throughout the sector. Helpdesk
A help desk is a department or person that provides assistance and information, usually for electronic or computer problems. In the mid-1990s, research by Iain Middleton of Robert Gordon University studied the value of an organization's help desks. It found that value was derived not only from a reactive response to user issues, but also from the help desk's unique position of communicating daily with numerous customers or employees. Information gained in areas such as technical problems, user preferences, and satisfaction can be valuable for the planning and development work of other information technology units. NCVO
The National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) is the umbrella body for the voluntary sector, voluntary and community sector in England. It is a registered charity (no. 225922). It works to support the voluntary and community sector and to create an environment in which an independent civil society can flourish. NCVO has a membership of more than 17,000 voluntary organisations. These range from large national bodies to community groups, volunteer centres, and development agencies working at a local level.
